Stay in Virginia and OC there. Take the metro into DC as you need.

Safe except for perhaps the subways. The subways in DC are a very efficient means of transportation, and appear to be safe. However, when I was there this summer, I was quite surprised that there is virtually no security on the subways -- backpacks everywhere unchecked. No one seems to mind and everything seems cool. Still though, I dread the day when the subways come under attack. Everything will come to a screeching halt.

We visited DC once in the last 40 years. Lots of very interestic stuff there. Now that I am retired, we plan to go back for an extended visit right after they begin honoring my NC permit.

There is only one gun law in this country, the 2nd Amendment. All else is bureaucratic nonsense that I choose to comply with or not at my discretion.

When governments make laws, they must consider the unintended consequences.

It's called passive security. Do something that violates the Metro rules and see what happens. I have seen it on two occasions. One was food in the station, a no-no. The Metro cop came out of a side access door and snagged the "eater". The other time was some youths boarded a train with a "boom-box". At the next station the doors in our car did not open until all exits were covered by Metro cops and the youths were led away quickly. The Metro cops have regular police powers so don't think they are rent-a-cops or otherwise dismiss them.

As for seeing the "Mall" area there are about 26 different law enforcement agencies operating in the "Mall" area. DC takes protecting the tourist areas very seriously as it is a major source of revenue for the city. Last year some youths mugged a couple tourists not far from a Smithsonian museum. They were caught within hours. It seems shooting a DC resident takes a back seat to a tourist mugging. How it goes. Leave the steel in the hotel or at home and enjoy your visit. Get out before 10 PM or so. Stay out of NE and SE DC except right around the "Mall". If you stray into SE or to far into NE you are fair game.

Belive me, if it is that much of a hassle, DC will never see my rotten-hide.

Plain and simple

I would not want to fly over it for the toxic fumes

Not trying to hijack thread....but how in the world did you get a Md permit? You have got to be one of the rarest people in Maryland!

+1 You must be LEO or work in security somehow. If you're a regular Joe who has a MD permit, I'm sure a number of people (including myself) would like to know how you pulled that off!
