Prior to moving to Virginia I lived in Prince Georges County, Maryland. I had a CCP. You need a valid, accepted reason, good enough that the State Police will agree with you. Maryland is not a "shall issue" state, but rather a "may issue" state. Unfortunately general protection is not a valid reason. Most Regular Joe permits are issued for a specific reason and carry a limitation.

So what was the acceptable reason that you used to get your Maryland permit?

On the original question and specifically safety in DC... I still routinely go there and my wife still lworks there. DC is one of the safest places in the country and also a very beautiful city. Many posters from other states may have a warped view of things. Crime is high but it is isolated in a few relatively small areas and is mostly family or bad guy on bad guy related. There is very little crime on the subways. There is very little crime in the tourist areas. There is much to do and see right downtown on the Mall, much more than a week would allow. Almost all of it is free and well worth seeing. The Archives, Smithsonian Museums, the monuments, National Gallery of Art, etc., all have priceless stuff. Just across the river is one of the most honored places in the country, Arlington National Cemetary. Every American should go there once in their lifetime. A sobering sight to be sure. Forgetting political crap...a visit to Washington can make you glad to be an American. |
