Same here, which sucks that we have to do that to be safe but I guess that is how the World is .

Great article! Thanks for sharing - I echo what has already been said. Many days I wonder if I shouldn't just leave the gun at home and not bother - I'm only going straight to the office and back. But you never know when things can turn ugly.

So damn tragic! Hope those people hang for what they did! I live in a nice area and I still will carry everywhere I go. I live right next to Garland about a 1/2 a mile. Some people in this neighborhood think that stuff can't happen here, but you never know. That is why I don't care if I am in Highland Park(upscale part of Dallas) or south Dallas(bad part of town) I will always be prepared for the worst and I hope everyone else does too.

Good lesson in this article for all of us..

For those who missed it:

Here's a link to the video of the shooter.

If you can understand him. I think it's impotant to him that you do understand because he keeps askin "you know what I'm sayin?"

I found that after listening intently twice, I began to understand what he said. He approached and talked with his victims for a few moments, then used the "got a cigarette" line, and shot them.

We always hear about criminals asking for a light, for the time, etc as a lead-in before they kill you, and here it is, straight from his own mouth. He even said he didn't care about the cigarette, the question was to calm himself for what he already knew he was going to do (he speaks about getting in "the zone") and to cause hesitation in the victim.

It's frustrating to listen to this guy, but we all need to. He doesn't know it or care, but there's a lot we can learn from him.

Is this hard to understand? Then why does it get unintelligible to some people when 5 little words are changed?

Doesn't it make you want to vomit watching the video? What a piece of crap! I almost shot my computer screen!
He is only 19 and says that he has had a life of hell here on earth. Whose fault is that? Hopefully where he's going he'll find out what he thought was a life of hell wasn't so bad.. right up until he took the lives of two innocent people. Two counts of capital punishment, convict and let him go to where he thought his life was here on earth.

I watched the video...worthless...waste of skin. Anyway...I had my wife watch the part where the BG said he asked for a cigarette (i.e. the interview), then he shot them--no reason.

A couple of weeks ago, we were driving through Boston and stayed overnight. While we were downtown, my wife and my mother were standing outside having a cigarette, when some guy walks up to them, starts chit-chatting, and then asks for a cigarette. As my wife and my mom when to check their purses (can you say Condition White?), I walked up and said "They don't have any"....sorry, no soup for you! He said "ok man, cool"...and walked off.

Next thing I know, my mom says..."it's ok..I had more"....My wife looks at me and realizes what just happened (doh!) I told my mom--"it isn't about the cigarette...it's about your awareness of what was going on around you. He was watching you...and then started looking in your purse...he saw me walk up and realized he was just put in the 'loss' column....you were being interviewed to be mugged"

Mom: "Oh Michael!....it's broad daylight!..there are a ton of people around...you're being paranoid"

Me: "...and none of them would have done a thing to stop him...don't do that again"

Of course, being in MA, I was not armed, except with my situational awareness and my wits.

Elsewhere in this forum (under the Law Enforcement discussion) I posted a thread about a Mississippi deputy on his way to D. C. for an Air Force reserve stint. He stopped in Gastonia, NC for the night and as he went out to his car to retreive a few things he was shot to death by two teenagers (one 17 and the other 16) who tried to rob him. Investigators said it appeared he did not have his service weapon with him when he died.

These tragic stories give reinforcement about always being prepared and always, always carrying.

I think I just learned my lesson.
