I am a grandmother who takes exception to Vicki Knox's remarks trivializing the new laws allowing concealed handguns in restaurants and public parks ("Don't carry guns to peaceful places," July 15).

I don't like guns, but I am grateful to those who do carry them for the protection they indirectly afford my family and me while we are in the very places Ms. Knox ingenuously believes are so safe. Wasn't a man recently arrested for allegedly killing and decapitating a young woman hiking in a Georgia park with her dog? As I recall, he also is being investigated for deaths in parks in North Carolina and Florida. The victims were folks who went, in Ms. Knox's words, "to public parks to relax, play with their pets, listen to music, or just share a romantic moment." Unfortunately, they met a pitiless, brooding man who wasn't there for the same reasons.

I won't go into Ms. Knox's specious comments about the "life-threatening fear from Ruby Tuesday's salad bar" except to tell her to get real! She should keep abreast of the horrific crimes that have taken place in eateries in other states, and armed robberies occurring almost nightly at area restaurants.

Ms. Knox disparages gun owners as conservatives spewing Christian platitudes, but then she quotes the Bible to support her point about living well and without fear. Living well and without fear are the precise reasons I am all for concealed-carry permits issued to responsible, law-abiding people. These individuals take it upon themselves to stand ready to thwart the predators who flow constantly through our prisons and create the huge backlog in our criminal court system by their criminal conduct. The willingness of these brave hearts to protect themselves and their loved ones offers a direct benefit to the rest of us who, though unarmed, will be equally protected. God bless them all.

generally olders folks have a better grasp of things , however at anytime a 30 yearold can be a grandma . which means a younger person could have this enlightened view . thanks

Amen to that. It just goes to show you that you don't have to be a concealed weapon carrier to support the cause, and that people from all walks of life can appreciate those who choose defend themselves and others.
