I carry in a SmartCarry with a round chambered but not locked and cocked so I don't worry about it.

I have been on the other side ...
In the snack area of Naples airport, I was eating my "lunch" and a trooper came in (aviation unit); he had an OD jumpsuit and a horizontal shoulder holster open carry. After a few minutes looking at the muzzle of what looked like a Beretta 92 pointed at me ( he was turning his back at me) I felt really uneasy and moved to another place. I know they have retention holsters, and the probability of an AD is almost zero but having been taught for many years and having been teaching for many years also "not to point a gun at anything you don't want to destroy", I am not comfortable with a firearm pointed at somebody even if I know it is unloaded. That's why I don't use my shoulder holster much even though it is the most comfortable. At one time I considered using it with an empty chamber, but I don't want to have two different procedures, for the same reason I always carry the same gun.

Thanks for all the replies. I just wanted to make sure that I was not being negligent. I take carrying a weapon very seriously and refuse to add ignorance to my EDC, hence the question.
I do realize the likelihood of a properly holstered weapon discharging is like .0001%. But still wanted your all's input. Thanks again. |

If it is in a holster or pocket and the hammer is down or the safety is on it is a non issue.

My opinion is that muzzle control is a factor only when the pistol is in your hand. If it's properly holstered, in the safe, on the bedside table (assuming no kids around) at night, it doesn't matter where the barrel is pointed.

The only complete safe gun, regardless of muzzle orientation, is unloaded in a gun safe. After that you have to be willing to accept some degree of faith in weapon and holster. +1 with LabTech.
