Missouri Concealed Carry Basics?

I will be in Missouri for a weeks vacation in September and need to know the basics...

I understand my Ohio permit is accepted there, but am unsure of specifics including:
- what locations are off limits for concealed carry?
- can I carry in a restaurant that serves alcohol?
- is it mandatory to volunteer I have a concealed firearm/license if I encounter LEO (e.g., minor traffic violation)?

I've looked on handgunlaw.us, but did not see links/detail that addresses these types of basic questions...

If you go to handgunlaw.us, look at the columns on the left. Click on "US Off-Limits A-M". At the top of the next page, click on "MO". Following is the info on Missouri.

You are not authorized to carry in any of the listed places, but if you do and are noticed, it is not a crime. If you are observed carrying in any of those places and refuse to leave, you can be charged with trespassing. If observed, leave immediately with no arguing.

I've read in the law where it requires a law officer to be summoned and for you to still refuse to leave before you can be charged with trespassing, but I'm too tired and short of time to look up that specific reference. The law is clear: the max punishment for the 1st offense is a $100 fine. The punishment increases for the 2nd and 3rd offense, and IIRC one will lose his/her CCW after the 3rd, and possibly for a short time after the 2nd. Wish I had the specifics, but I never intend to make it to the 2nd and 3rd time. I've never made it to the 1st, and I'd like to keep it that way.

Bars and casinos are on the list. I don't see anything about restaurants that serve alcohol, but I haven't researched that specifically to see if it is covered elsewhere.

This site says it is not mandatory. However, our CCW status is linked to our driver's license, so the LEO will find out I have a CCW license when he or she runs my license. IMO, since they will find out in less than a minute after running my license, it's better to be upfront with them than to have them surprised later. In your situation, I don't know if they would receive that information when they run your license. I guess in your situation ya takes yer chances if you don't want to tell them.

Here is the link to the Missouri Attorney General website that lists the laws. Section 571.107 is what handgunlaw summarized above. Lots of reading at the AG site.

Welcome to Missouri! Enjoy your trip, but watch your speed and your surroundings.

Oh, I just noticed one more thing: in the list of unapproved places, a couple federal places are listed. It may not be a violation of Missouri law to carry in those places, but it WILL be a violation of federal law. So I'd darn sure be careful not to carry in those places, such as the secured part of an airport and any government buildings. I don't want you end up in the pokey because I wasn't clear in my post.

I think you are ok carrying concealed in a restaurant...it is not specifically listed...just don't go into the bar portion of the restaurant.

At my brother's wedding in KC a couple of years ago, I carried everywhere (I did not go into bars, and the like)--but I did carry in restaurants. I did carry in the church knowing it was NOT a crime and kept it concealed.

Here is a link to a brochure that the Missouri State Highway Patrol has published reguarding concealed carry http://www.mshp.dps.missouri.gov/MSH...ts/SHP-863.pdf

if your not finding the answers on the brochure the state statutes can be found here RSMO-Chapter 571

hope this helps

Everyone else pretty much covered everything pretty well.

I will say that restaurants that sell alcohol are ok as long as 51% of their sales go for food or things other than alcohol. So places like Applebee's and the like are ok, as long as they aren't posted with a sign. And then, all they can do is ask you to leave.

Missouri is pretty gun friendly as far as their CCW laws go. Also we have Castle Doctrine which applies to your hotel/motel rooms. You can carry a loaded concealed weapon in your car even without a CCW permit as long as you are over 21.

Welcome to Missouri and enjoy your trip.
