Just received my permit in the mail today! I'm having trouble understanding the law regarding vehicle transportation. Does the firearm need to be kept in a locked container, away from the passenger compartment during transportation? Does this apply to both the driver and passenger?

I live in New York and spend quite a bit of time in Connecticut. I tried Handgunlaw.us and the way I'm interpreting the law is if you do not have a permit to carry, the firearm needs to be locked and out of reach.

Are there any other Connecticut folks here that might be able to help me better understand the law? Where do you keep your firearm while in a vehicle.

Ct. CC permit (non-resident) allows you to CARRY a concealed weapon on your person. Glove box could get sticky as it might be considered to be accessible to a passenger. Call Ct. and find out for sure.

As for transporting the weapon if you DO NOT have a permit:

"...people may transport unloaded handguns through Connecticut for lawful purposes without a Connecticut permit if they (1) are not otherwise prohibited from shipping, transporting, receiving, or possessing guns and (2) are transporting them from one state where they can legally possess and carry guns to another state where they can legally possess and carry them. They cannot use, carry, sell, deliver, or otherwise transfer the guns while in the state. Also, they must keep the guns (and any ammunition) in an area where they are not directly or readily accessible from the passenger compartment of a vehicle. If the vehicle does not have a compartment separate from the passenger compartment, they must lock the guns (and any ammunition) in a container other than the glove compartment or console (CGS § 29-38d). "

As to the glove compartment, I don't see that getting sticky either during a traffic stop or in court absent a situation in which the permit holder or others in the car do something that involves the firearm.

The passenger having the weapon on his person; yes, you will have a problem...

But a handgun in the glove box while having a passenger riding with you, absent other factors? Kosher.

The word "other" comes into play here.

so this would apply to 'people' w/o a Connecticut permit...a permit holder should then be able to carry the firearm on his/her person?

I think I'll ask this question to the Special licensing division of the State Police.
