This is the problem with threads like this. Lots of examples that can't be backed up. People talking about things they've heard or something they've read. In the past few years of being on various gun boards I have yet to see a post about a guy getting sent to the slammer because he shot someone and the main reason he went to jail was his gun was modified in someway to make it more deadly. If that really happened the forums would be buzzing about it. There would be thread after thread and legal defense funds set up. Yet I don't remember seeing any.

If the prosecutor wants to send you to jail when you are involved in a shooting he will find a way. Maybe you just came from watching an ultra violent movie and were acting out what you saw in the movie. Maybe a combination of your allergy medicine and Pepsi Max got you so hopped up you were looking for a thrill. Maybe your gun is stock out of the box and you just bought it and wanted to see what it would do. If he wants to put you in jail for whatever reason, he'll try.

The main reason for carrying concealed is to protect our lives. I am not going to make concessions when it comes to protecting my life. I will carry the weapon that I shoot best. If modifications enable me to hit the target more accurately and quicker then I will modify it. If certain ammunition ensures the safety of others or gives me an advantage in protecting my life I will use it.

Imagine being "politically correct" in your weapon choice and you are placed in a position of protecting your life or the life of your loved ones. As you bring the weapon to bear are you going to be thinking, "Dear God, why don't I have my XYZ gun?"

Not for me, but it seems to be working for some who are afraid to modify their guns for better shooting or handling, and are also afraid to use handloads.

I think both concerns are hokey. Until someone can provide instances, and more than one or two, I am going to remain convinced that those concerns are a waste of time.
I hear CCW instructors repeating the danger of handloads due to smart lawyers making it an issue. But no one has provided proof that it is an issue. The main issue is whether it is a legal, self-defense shooting.

I guess we need something to post about.

Regards,
Jerry

Over the years I have definitely read cases of prosecutors making issue of mods and ammo at SD trials. I just can't point to specific case law, since I've been reading Ayoob and other SD-related books, magazines, and legal accounts for some 25-30 odd years, and my memory is not what it used to be.

Of course you tend to read more about the sensational or ridiculous cases and not the run-of-the-mill ones. So I would suggest that while it *has* happened, it's not likely a common occurrence. That said, when it's your life and freedom on the line, just how much are you willing to gamble that you won't be that one-in-a-thousand case where it IS an issue?

I just bought 100 rounds of HST after shooting HydraShoks for 10+ years. My argument for that would be that HST has demonstrated less overpenetration compared to a plugged HydraShok, and is also reported to be more accurate. Both points could be argued in my favor as me being concerned for the safety of others. That would be the only concern I would have, as my guns are otherwise pretty much stock. About the only things I ever change are things like grips and sights.
