Informing a law enforcement officer that you have a license but are not armed is analogous to telling a park ranger that you hve a fishing license when you are not fishing.

Last time I drove thru W Texas was in a Greyhound Bus. We got pulled over at 4am and they made everyone get off the bus that didn't have ID. I showed my military ID and they let me stay on board. Turned into a 2 hr ordeal. But I never complained since I knew of some of the people that ride Greyhounds are dirtbags.
They searched some bags and ticketed the driver for speeding. All in all, a slight delay. The time before that, we were on family vacation going down I-10 or 20 (can't remember) and the posted speed limit was 65. My dad was driving at the tail end of a long line of cars, and we got pulled over. LEO saw our dog, and said roll up the windows and turn the car off... my dad refused since the temp would skyrocket, so the LEO asked me to sit in the drivers seat (I was 10). He told my dad he clocked him at 85 mph. My dad asked how fast the car 3 lengths in front was going and the Officer said 60. My dad got out of the ticket by proving the officer wrong and he drove out of Texas with a huge smile on his face. If I'm speeding and get caught... I may try to talk my way out of it, but if I get a ticket, I don't have a problem. LEOs have a job to do, just like most of us. |

Nothing wrong with attempting to talk your way out of a ticket, as long as you're respectful and contrite -- most cops are reasonable and if you weren't being entirely stupid (like I was in the incident I relayed earlier in this topic) they will often give you a break. However arguing with them by the side of the road is almost never productive, I'd suggest saving it for court if you want to argue your case.
In almost 30 years of driving I've been pulled over maybe 8 times for speeding, most of which was in my youth (only twice in the last 15 years). Only 3 resulted in tickets. I'm very contrite and respectful, and having a veteran's DL and plates probably helps -- the last time I was pulled over was by a fellow Desert Storm vet. Turns out we were in some places at the same time, might have even run into each other over there. We swapped war stories for a few minutes and then he sent me on my way with a verbal warning. ![]()

In N.C. we are taught to tell the officer even if you are UNARMED, you see he already knows that you have the permit when he enters the plate number into the computer it is tied to your vehicle registration. And failure to disclose could cost you your permit!

It's always a good idea to let LEO's know you have a CCP and are carrying when we approach during a stop. Here in Virginia we will know you're CCP when we run your license. I'd much rather you let me know up front so there are no surprises for either of us. To me this appears to be a good stop and for proper reason. If you don't want stopped keep the speed down near posted. You could be anything from AOK to a fleeing muderer and there are more of the latter out there these days. We need to know, especially if you are carrying or have it at hand. Don't ever have one in the console or glove box and reach for your registration there without letting us know before hand. It could get real hairy quickly.
