I don't even want to know, just looking at what it costs in gas to get to the indoor range from home is enough to make me scream, not to mention that usually (pre-baby) that it was both Lima and I going to the range, so double the ammo cost and lane fees.

Then there was that one class that required 600 rounds a piece, travel, lodging, food cost, tuition....

If I had to guess, over the last three years, between 5K and 10K if you include travel expenses.

No when Lima was working at a range, and we got discounts up the wazoo, well those were good times.

Anyone else have this thought? Anyone ever skimp on practice to buy a gun? If so, how long it take and what you get?
no range fee's because i shoot on our own ranch....hubby reloads for me so i think its about 30 bucks a week for 250 rounds

Hm. Let me see ...

Basically: $0.18/rd 16yrs ago, vs $0.36/rd now. Ah ... progress!

When I was starting to eval a carry pistol, some 16yrs ago, I did ~30K rounds in the first three and a half years. 50Krds, before the fifth year was done. (Of course, that's only half what an annual "burn" rate is for a top IPSC/IDPA competitor.)

Over that 3yr period, the session costs were (roughly): 480 50rd boxes of 9mm range rounds @ $6/box, 120 50rd boxes of 9mm "carry" rounds @ $14/box, plus about 75 range sessions @ $10/session. That's = $2880 + 1680 + 750 = $5310, or ~$1517/yr, or ~$71/session, or $0.18/rd. And that was just the pistols. Plus a small percentage for maintenance and gunsmithing costs on the guns.

About 3yrs ago, I was going through ammo at much the same rate, for 8mos or so.

Since then, I have shot far less frequently. The consumption is down to ~3Krds/yr: 45 50rd boxes of 9mm range rounds @ $10/box, 15 50rd boxes of "carry" rounds @ $24/box, plus about 18 range sessions/yr on a $120yr annual range fee. That's = $450 + 360 + 120 = $930/yr, or ~$52/session, or $0.31/rd. Say "hello" to the new price of ammunition. About 40% less expensive for the range time, but about 80% more for ammo. Add in ~$300 in gunsmithing over this period, and it works out to $60/session, or $0.36/rd.

None of this includes training, gas/lodging to the training events, books, gunsmithing beyond "maintenance" items, holsters (!), or any of the other stuff. The way I look at it, my burn rate's high enough that ratcheting back 25% in a given year buys me a new gun, plus enough ammo to cover that full year on the new gun. What a world.

Don't really want to think about it!
But I would say ALOT less this year than others.
Business is almost non-existant this year and things are WAY too tight. I do reload, and was shooting 5k+ rounds a year just Cowboy Shooting, but even reloading is getting expensive.
Carry guns are a Firestar .40, or a Glock 22, and occasionally an FEG/SMC 9mm Makarov for better concealment. So the majority of defensive ammo is .40 s&w. (Makarov is not that fun to shoot and not really any cheaper, so I only shoot it enough to stay familiar)
From Cheaper-than-dirt or Sportsmans Guide, commercial .40 can be had for around $260 per thou.
Reloading: Jacketed Bullets are about $122 per thou, primers are $25+ per thou, powder is $20+ a pound (will do close to a thousand rounds) plus time! In addition reloaded (esp. lead bullets) are not recommended in the Glock. I know.....conversion barrels are available....again another $135.
Would like to get a .22 conversion for the Glock, but as I said, un-earmarked money is rare this year.
Doing alot of Dry Firing and wishing for an Airsoft gas/blowback Glock and a better economy.

Let's just that "dry fireing" has become a large part of my weekly regimen with my EDC gun.

I like to fire 200 rounds weekly out of my EDC gun. 4 years ago it would only cost me rouphly $50 with the indoor range fee and less if I used the back forty with stationary targets. I think 200 rounds per week if more than enough. I can stagger my timed shots, double taps, slow aimed fire and hammers throughout the 200 rounds. I take my time and use a shot clock and I've been able to increase my accuracy and my times by paying more attention to "how I'm shooting" than "Just shooting"

I'm spending more and more time out on the back forty(saving me the range fees) with paper and one steel target.

I was spending $100 a week this spring, mainly in 9mm, 40cal, and 45acp. Incurred some vehicle repair costs this summer, but still bought at least a box of 100WWB for $20 weekly. Gas prices also took the big jump. The wife and I were going to the range once a week earlier this summer, now it's about once every two weeks and I've caught up on my firearms cleanings. Whenever I go to Wally World now, I usually find a good deal on the bulk ammo, and make a spontaneous buy....like this week. $70 worth for 615 rounds of ammo. The Federal .223 was $40, the Winchester 22lr was $13, and the Remington buckshot was $12, add $5 for tax for all.

Costs me $100 per year membership for the gun club, and unlimited range use at a choice of two ranges. The closest range to me is 2 miles as the crow flies!

That is also why I reload, It still cost less then buying loaded ammo.
