Actually, federal law requires that you have been given notice of the fact that something is considered a 'federal facility' for the purposes of the no-carry provision.

You're exactly right. Seemingly "normal" people can lose their cool and their actions are unpredictable. With no one else armed, the stage is set for a shooter's actions to go unchallenged.

You are beating a dead horse

You can think up all the plausible scenarios you want, but that doesn't change the fact that if you are caught carrying on Federal property, you are likely in for a world of hurt.

Getting one's self worked up over this is bad for the blood pressure.

Personally, I like the addition at the bottom of the sign. It removes ANY ambiguity as to the legality (or illegality, if you prefer) of carrying on that property.

The general rule is no firearms in Federal bldgs.

It is not necessarily pleasant to visit a social security office, and yes, you do have to wonder about some of the folks in there. That is because these offices handle more than just applications for "retirement" benefits.

For older folks who need to apply for their retirement benefits it is fairly quick and relatively easy to get the job done ON-LINE through the Social Security Web site.

Once you have supplied the information, your case will be sent on to your local office, and in many instances, you will be able to complete things without ever setting foot in the bldg.

My impression, even when conducting bizz at the office, is that everything is very automated and decisions are driven by computer programs. There are appeals routes available. And, when all else fails, a letter to your Congress Critter can often help as well. They can get you in to see a boss instead of the lowest level dufus.

I'm sure things vary by geography, but the office in my community seems to be well managed and well run, by very polite well trained people; though, admittedly they sometimes do things in the weirdest backward way imaginable--no doubt because of limitations to the computer programs they have been given to work with.

TIP-- When you leave your job to retire, be sure to get a W-2. Let's say you
retire in August. If you want credit for the work you did between Jan1 and August, you will need a W-2 for the present calendar year. It is ridiculous that
they don't have up to the minute earnings info in their system, but that seems to be the way it is.

Jmac, I understand what you're trying to say with your statement. I, too, have had seen some "normies" begin to "lose it" under the strain of Federal bureaucracy. IMHO, signs are a useless (but lawfully required) component of securing the area. Armed guards and metal detectors at least give me a reasonable assurance that only the GOOD guys are carrying.

Now as for the pistol qualification requirements of those officers... I think you'll find me behind Class 2 cover if there's a shootout. ;-)

Went to the Longview, Washington SS office last month. Noted signs. after 5 minutes an Armed guard came out of the back room with both of his hands full of food. So who was guarding the building when he was away - no one.
Wife (a sweet looking grandma) went to the same office a week later and the guard made her show ID, asked her if she had any weapons, wanted her to empty her pockets and purse! She said no thanks, I'll go online.
