What if the dog was obviously a puppy? And the owner a child of say 11. Would it be ok to mace the puppy?

Geez. I hate it when people let their dogs run loose.

I run a lot. Just the fact that I'm running will make some dogs chase me.

I've had to do a punt returns to a few rib cages.

Neighbors always come outside and sheepishly say "oh, he won't hurt you."

Arrrrgh.

Huh? You would rather get bitten by a dog than protect yourself? To each his own I guess. Good luck with that.

A couple of years ago my wife was bitten by a Boxer that charged her. If I had been with her when it happened there would have been a different outcome, guaranteed. If these boxers in question charged a full grown man, what's to stop them from charging women or children? You cannot predict a charging dog's intentions unless you have a personal relationship with them. Period.

Yes, owners need to control their dogs, always, absolutely.

However, I have done a whole lot of walking and bicycling in suburban and rural areas over the last sixty plus years and never needed to mace or shoot a single dog. You are either very, very unlucky with respect to dogs, or you are fearful of dogs, or you dont understand dog 'talk', or you over react to dogs, or you just smell like a sack of Ol' Roy. Yeah, probably just bad luck.

To me the only person that counts is the one in the immediate situation. If you feel threatened take action. I don't consider someone elses dog worth being bitten over.

I carry a cane when walking. Its more of a club actually and I have had no problem in the past using it on someones pet. Even a rat terrier is fair game if it looks like its going to bite. I do not want to be bitten no mater how big or small the dog is.

I have no idea what Ol' Roy is, but that is downright funny.

I encounter dogs all the time on the job. Most are not particularly well behaved either.

I'm not particularly afraid of dogs, but do have a healthy respect for the capabilities of an aggressive dog. I keep a watchful eye out when in peoples homes that have dogs.

I would not hesitate to OC spray any dog aggressively approaching me which doesn't back down with a loud commanding voice to "Back Off".

I carry OC spray everywhere and when out exercising/walking, I'll keep it in my hand at the ready. Other times it's close enough.

I love dogs and presently have a Basset hound and a coon hound.

It's interesting that although we have a ban on Pitbulls in my town, every person in town who owns one says "It's not a Pitbull, it's a Boxer!" Who the hell are they kidding?

I asked my neighbor if he knew pitbulls were illegal and he gave me the usual, "It's a Boxer" line... I said "That dog is not a Boxer!" He then said, "Well, it's mixed breed."

I then asked, "Mixed with what?" He then sheepishly replied with a grin, "Pitbull." I said, "It's still illegal, keep it on a leash and we won't have any problems!" He got rid of it a couple months later.

Thumbs up

Aggressive dogs earn their response. If irresponsible and derelict owners are going to ignore the threat their dogs present to others, then the dogs are going to get what they get. The idiot owner should redirect some of his attention span on his dereliction of responsibility to his neighbors' safety and well being.

I carry a stick/cane sometimes, in the neighborhood or parks. A good crack across the muzzle with one of these can change the direction of a charging dog pretty quickly.

My response depends on the threat. It's entirely likely an obvious puppy would just be playing. In my experience, that mostly is clear in the movement and mannerisms the dog displays. Change those two to aggressiveness, then the "obviousness" of the dog's age has no material value when compared to my safety.

I think you did the right thing and thank you for posting this. It has motivated me to buy some pepper spray in case this happens to me (regarding the aggressive dogs, not the posters).
