I once had a dog take a chunk of flesh out of my leg about 3/4 inch deep. No damn fun at all so I don't blame you for your reaction.

Considering I was attacked by a neighbors dog while under my truck, I can now see macing any dog that charges me. Learned my lesson, play it safe.

You Were Right

We are dog lovers, but you were correct in taking action while being charged by the dogs. Thanks for using the Mace and not the handgun. That would have been ugly, potentially. And unnecessary, in all likelihood. As to the neighbor, well, you didn't win the lottery on this one, did you? I had a neighbor once who threatened to shoot my dog if he came across the street into his yard. Actually, he told that to my wife, big tuff guy that he was. We keep our dogs in our yard, but one got out and we retrieved her. She barks alot. So did my neighbor. He was a deadbeat and had his home foreclosed, even before it became a serious problem, and he destroyed much of the home before moving out. New neighbors now, and they're great. Maybe yours will move. We can only hope.

I'm a dog owner/lover. If I were you're neighbor... I would be very grateful that you reached for your mace and not your weapon. I would be doing some serious aplogizing for letting my dogs charge you and not having them under control.

I had a job once where a firearm was not allowed to be carried, even though we were out and about doing underground utility line locates. So I carried Counter Assault Bear Spray, because of some of the areas we got into, we did run up against some griz that would be out and about.

Well the Counter Assault Bear Spray works on dogs very effectively I might add

But, I believe the deputy is wrong for telling you not to carry your firearm.

Especially if that "young child" was only 150 pounds (3/4 grown)

I submit that a clear attack is clear to a reasonable man. Size is only part of the degree of threat perceived, and it merely hints at age, and age only hints at the naivete or stupidity possible in such a small package. Either way, that one factor you point out (size) combines with manner, behavior and actions to support an assessment of threat. The totality of circumstances and factors matter.

The point was, comparing a charging pair of boxer dogs acting in tandem in what appeared to a reasonable person to be an attack with a "child on a bike" is unworthy of us. An attack is an attack, whether it comes in one package or another. Should it meet the standards justifying force to defend, then it does ... irrespective of whether it's dogs, felons, children or whatever.

CCW9MM, My post about the 150 pound 3/4 size child was in reference to a few previous posts, and in no way was a negative comment to your post. And your reply that included "the totality of circumstances" speaks of your intelligence and education. I apologize if there was a misunderstanding brought about by my reply to your participation in the discussion.

No worries.

There's big 11yr old children around here, too.
