I think you did the correct thing. I live in central Michigan and less than 7 miles from where I live two people were mauled to death by a pack of lose dogs. One was a 40 year old women who was out walking down a country road. The other was a 80 year old man who was a neighbor to the women who owned the dogs. He was killed by the dogs in his own yard. All this happened on the same day. Also, less than a year ago, my next door neighbor's two dogs mauled another neighbors horse while in was in it's own stall. It was mauled so bad that it had to be put down. The sheriff dept had to shoot both dogs. So needless to say, when I walk my dog at home I am armed to the max and have NO problems taking the correct actions should the need arise. I have NO tolerence for people who don't control their animals. Dogs may not know any better but their owners sure as h*ll do!

I like dogs, and own an agressive one, but there are no bad dogs, just bad dog owners. Mine is under control.

With that said, you were 100% totally in the right to defend yourself against a potentially serious, possibly deadly situation. The dog owner is soley to blame on this one. Not having any dog under control and violating any leash or pet law is clearly irresponsible. This clown was wrong pure and simple. By allowing his animals to charge unhindered, he put them in a situation to get maced or even shot. Don't sweat it, you have just as much right as any to walk down the street and also the right to protect yourself from harm by dog or human.

Another word

Just in case anyone thinks I am a dog hater , I have owned animals all my life and I married a Licensed Veterinary Technician. We have two dogs, a Pittbull that I adopted and a Rottweiler that are indoor dogs. We have a 1/2 acre yard with a 5' high chain link fence where we exercise them. When we do walk the dogs it is on 6' leashes and devices called Halties. They look like a strap muzzle and prevent the dog from pulling away. But the Halties are more for show since we trained our dog to not pull. I just wish more people were took responsibility for their dogs. I know that owners are responsible for bad dogs and that is really the sad thing, the animal suffers for the owner. But I have a family and a future, I am just trying to preserve that as long as I can.

There are leash laws for a reason, and unless someone is a trained behaviorist, they're not usually going to know what the dog's intent is, unless it's already biting them. (Some acts looks almost exactly the same as other, but with very few, very subtle differences.) Your neighbor is an idiot.

Some dog owners should be maced. Save their dog the hassle.

Man, that is a terrible story. But it is a good reminder that dogs are indeed pack animals. The neighbor that lives three doors down used to have 3 dogs that got loose 4, yes I said 4 times in 3 months. Once in a State Park. They paid a total of $2030 to get them back in the end and it was only that cheap because the last time they chose to take back only the german shepherd. Well the last time they got loose they attacked the neighbor's dog across the street and tried to attack me and my wife. Back then I had no mace and no gun. German Shepherd and two huskies three feet away from me. Animal control took them away. The woman who's dog got attacked was pissed at me for calling animal control because it WAS HER NIECE'S DOGS! They got the German Shepherd back the next day despite the fact that it attacked another dog. This time it cost them $1200 for the one dog. Calgon take me away.

I kind of took this suggestion more as a reinforcement by him as the mace being the best thing for self defense while walking in this neighborhood. It is hard to tell what his concerns may have been but I am sure he has some. I just told him I had a permit and the gun was for a last resort to save my life. He was a very nice officer, I have been very fortunate to have never met one I didn't like.

Mace???????

IME as an LEO Mace doesn't work on dogs.

Pepper spray does.

I have sprayed Mace in a dogs mouth, he didn't like the taste but it didn't change his mind either.

You hit on my "pet peeve". People that dont control their animals. Letting their pets run all over the neighborhood. It's like everyone should just accept their pet getting in the garbage and scaring the kids. Then they take them for a walk unleashed.
Good for you for spraying them.

Thank you for pointing that out. Maybe I was using the term Mace interchangeably with pepper spray. The product that I used is manufactured by Red Sabre and is Michigan Legal. The package says Pepper Spray 2% OC/0.67% Major Capsaicinoids. It was not as effective on the second dog, this may have been due to my aim being off. I will ask my LEO instructors if there is a Michigan Legal Pepper Spray that is a different from the stream type that may be more effective at hitting the target at 4 feet.

Agree with the "You must be in control of your dogs." I hate seeing good pups, with bad owners (I've got 3 pups myself)

Now if we could get the Animal Control manage the pet and feral cat populations!

I think you done good, unfortunant that you had to, but you did what was necessary.
