Obviously you have never suffered a dog bite. I consider any charging dog a potential threat and act accordingly.

I posit you can easily make judgments about dogs simply by the breed. Wife and I used to own a Brittany and a toy poodle. No one ever worried about our dogs. Plus, we were responsible owners.

I think pit bull owners (and to some extent other breeds) are like the kids in high school who want to dress like an urban thug, and then whine to mom and dad that just because they dress with the baggy pants, bandanas, chains, tatts, and angry expression, they are just a nice guy.

"Gee, mom, not all guys who dress like this are gansters and thugs...."

Perhaps not, but I am sticking with statistics. Your pit bull/rottie/etc. is a killer until you prove my suspicions incorrect. I will not base my life on assuming it isn't.

I agree on pit bulls and other more likely vicious dogs.
Whe a dog runs at you it is not always clear what his intention is.

I am 76, and last Oct got a staph infection in my spine. I wondered in Jan if I would ever walk again without a walker.
During that time my son was home, and I wanted to try a cane. He walked with me and I had to hold to him as I was not steady.

During the walk all of the sudden a relatively small bull dog ran at us, and we did not see him until he was probaly 7 or so yards from us.
My son stepped in front of me, and I fell when I had to move. He kept the dog from getting to us, and although afterwards we realized from the owner that the dog was friendly and just greeting us, how were we to know? In addition if he had jumped up on me I would have fallen anyway. Fortunately I did not further injure my back from the fall. I could not have carried or used a gun under any circumstances as I needed both hands to stay upright.

My son and the owner had some words, and when I got home I reported the incident. Subsequently, the animal control gave him a ticket for not restraining his dog. I informed them that the dog had not made any attempt to bite, but we did not know and I went down anyway.

You dog owners keep them under strict control. In my neighborhood there are a fair number of elderly who walk, and cannnot avoid a dog.

I am recovered now, but do carry a gun and spray when I walk.

There are a couple of rather fierce dogs on the block, and if one of them ever got out and charged I would shoot him if I had time.

Regards,
Jerry

Hey, you have no choice but to OC an aggressive dog as quickly as possible when the animal is charging at you.

By the time they get right on top of you it's too late to find out if you'll get bitten or not.

For sure the OC needs to be "in hand" or it's hard to get it into play quick enough to beat a fast moving dog.

My super friendly non aggressive/passive Cocker was attacked and bitten once by a really vicious loose dog and so I always carry an OC key-chain unit each and every time I walk her these days.

We also have a leash law here and I will OC any aggressive unattended dog that charges my dog.

It's temporary - non lethal - it works and it sure is much better and more humane for the dog than broken ribs due to a devastating bone breaking boot kick from me.

I love Boxers, they typically are great with people, I would have assumed that they were just saying hi, they are rambunctious, high energy dogs. Then again, I've had Boxers all of my life. I wouldn't have sprayed them but I don't blame the OP for doing it. People need to control their animals, period. If nothing else it might teach the moron owner a lesson. They could just as easily have ran out into the street and got hit by a car. It sucks that the owner put you and his dogs in a bad situation.

I just got home after one of my criminal justice classes and strapped on the WT Instructor's Belt and the Kelt Tec P-11. With mace in hand I embark on my brisk walk. I made it 1/4 mile and it happened. A man is taking his kid out of his car and had 2 boxer dogs next to him in his driveway. Boxer one sees me and bolts at top speed right for me. I start yelling "Get your dog, get your dog!" When the dog was about five feet from me I start macing. The owner yells "He won't bite you". I'm not taking that chance. The dog skids to a stop, face coated in mace and runs back to the house. I take a few steps in the direction I was walking and boxer two, about 3/4 grown, bolts towards me. Just before he gets to me I mace him down left handed. He doesn't stop at first so I lifted my shirt and covered my pistol in case I had to draw. The guy started screaming at me"What the H is wrong with you he is just a puppy he isn't going to hurt you, this is ridiculous!". I didn't want to aggravate him but I did tell him that his dogs left his property and made an aggressive move on me, there is a leash law in Michigan. He then told me to get walking and get the H outta there.
Did I mention how much I HATE living out here and I got the mace after being approached by over 16 aggressive dogs in 3 1/2 years. I called the police because I did touch my weapon and I wanted to cover my buttocks. The Sheriffs Deputy that came out to my house told me that he didn't need to see my I.D. or my Concealed Pistol License. He met me at my house. He was very nice, but since he knows the family that owns the dog I seriously doubt they will be ticketed for violating the leash law. He suggested I keep carrying the mace but then said he probably wouldn't walk with the gun. I just told him I had a permit and don't necessarily carry the gun for dogs. Good experience with LEO and usual but terrible experience with my neighbors as usual.
Oh well, here we go again. I'm by far the minority in this thread, as usual, but let me translate the thread title:

Mall ninja maces puppies as he readies his gun!

It amazes me how many people are clueless about dogs. All big dogs have "lethal weapons, their teeth!" As if your life was in grave danger from the ..... puppies!

So needless to say, when I walk my dog at home I am armed to the max and have NO problems taking the correct actions should the need arise. I have NO tolerence for people who don't control their animals. Dogs may not know any better but their owners sure as h*ll do!
It was a puppy, not a marauding pack of pit bulls on a killing spree. Gimme a break.

In reality, since you were not there, your opinion is irrelevant.

In reality, it would appear that my opinion aligns closely with someone else that was there.
