You made an enormous mountain out of a molehill.
It must be nice being the world's best dog whisperer who is also gifted with clairvoyance and absolute moral superiority over everyone.

Big dogs can easily hurt people, that's fact. Whether or not these two intended any kind of response other than a good licking is beside the point. Two big dogs that you don't know at all that start running at you would give just about anyone pause.

Even if they were just wanting to play, he had every right to mace them. It didn't hurt the dogs permanently, the owner was in violation of the law, and I'm sure it taught the two a lesson they shouldn't have had to learn if they had a responsible owner. It's not a good idea to bank on the best of intentions of unfamiliar people or animals.

I have never had a dog come at me aggressively. Most of them know their role and automatically submit to me. I am blessed like that.

People these days get a puppy and think that walks, feeding, and watering along with vet care is enough and they are wrong. I know of two people that have boxers that can't let them close to people or other dogs because of prior attacks. I've had GR's all my life and make it my responsibility to know everything I can about the breed and proper training...

Ok, I'll get off my Soap Box now... Just my two cents...
I couldn't agree more...

The dog owner called them puppies. I know a man with a 13 year old Lab and he still calls him a puppy. Besides, what else would he say after both his dogs just tried to attack someone? I have owned dogs all my life and I know the difference between a puppy and something else. I believe most people(like our friend here) do too. I also find it funny that of all the responses in this post you seem to display the cocky, know it all attitude, that only a REAL mall ninja would have.

Not to mention the lack of civility.

Most dog owners that let their dogs run loose like that probably will not learn from this encounter which is too bad for the dog.

Thank you for that. After reading a few posts this one made me laugh. I appreciate a good sense of humor even when dealing with serious issues.

The OP was about to draw a gun on what he called a puppy. He maced two family dogs and was about to draw a gun on a puppy in front of the owner and small child. He was about to draw a gun for fear of his life from a puppy! This is his version of the story.

Sorry folks, but you guys can go on and on about the irresponsibility of dog owners, their vicious puppies (still laughing, I can't help it!), and whether or not macing the little guy is going to teach that irresponsible owner a lesson he so rightly deserves.

The relevant topic for this forum was the gun. My advice is that you better have a good lawyer and a big stash of cash before you start drawing your gun down on puppies. There's going to be a lot of people in the community that think your irresponsible use of a gun is a lot bigger risk to the community than the man who violated the leash law and his puppy.

Thank you

I would like to thank everyone that has responded to my posting of this situation in an intelligent and civilized manner. Even the posters that did not necessarily agree with the way that I handled the situation. My thread at least opened up a very good discussion on the scenario. Although it is unfortunate that the thread was attempted to be hijacked by one person who intends on personally attacking others instead of engaging in meaningful dialog. I will not let that deter me from participating in this forum in the future. And again thank you for the comments and suggestions.

That is funny. You wouldn't happen to be Crocodile Dundee would you?
