The Montana Highway Patrol has a Task Force that conducts compliance checks at various locations around the State. They always announce the checks to the media in advance, but they never divulge the location.
A check was conducted in my county yesterday. Troopers stopped every sixth vehicle (83 total) and issued 36 citations and warnings. Highway compliance checks have been ruled constitutional by the Montana Supreme Court. I've never been caught in one, but I wouldn't care if I was. My registration, insurance and DL are current, so I don't worry about it.

I was really annoyed the first time I was stopped at one of those checkpoints. All they did was ask if I had had anything to drink, but it felt like a big intrusion.
My mom disagreed with me, so she set me up on a ride-along for the next checkpoint. Wow. It was a seriously eye-opening experience. The number of drunk drivers that they caught that night was staggering. It made me not want to drive at all on weekend nights. I still can't believe there are so many people out there who have no qualms with the idea of risking everyone else's life for no particular reason. The ratio of drunk drivers to sober ones was probably like 1/10. The idea of it still bothers me, but for some reason I'd rather not be dead. It's not like they were asking if you owned guns, or whatever, it was more just "hey how's it going" and it was immediately obvious if someone was smashed. If not, they were on their way. If so, walk the line and get in the wagon.

As long as LEO is stopping everybody there isn't a problem. If they're stopping only blacks, mexicans etc then it becomes profiling.

This is buying into the propaganda. They want you to think this, thus they repeat it over and over to everyone in high school.
In reality, you have the right to do anything you want as long as you do not endanger others. The government cannot arbitrarily decide who can drive and who can't, by right. What they CAN do is prevent people from repeatedly endangering others...and this is exactly what the law does with respect to driver's licenses. If someone shows they are unsafe, they are taken off the road for the protection of others, not for any other reason. We do not live in a country where every action you take, you can only take by the good graces of some bureaucrat.

That's true to a point, but again, the right to drive is not in the Constitution. As such they can set any arbitrary rule they want. Ridculously low speed limits, speed traps, red light cameras, use of seatbelts, driving with insurance and not driving drunk to name just a few. Do I agree with all of them? No, but the roads I operate my car on do not belong solely to me so I agree to the rules so I may use the roads. The checkpoints are a pain in the azz, but someone you know or love may be alive today because one of those morons was taken off the road one night.
