If you want to avoid downtown traffic and are coming either west on I-70 or south on I-55, Catch I-270 at about the 15 or 18 mm (depending on which road you are on) and take it around to I-44. about 2 miles difference, less traffic and much better roadway.

in response to F-350, Cabellas is in Hazelwood, a suburb of St. Louis. It is in North County, not "Northside", meaning the bad part of the City.

To the OP, In downtown, you will be okay. Just lke any other big city, keep your eyes and ears open.

Do you know which part of St Louis you will be staying in? We can guide you a little better that way.

Thanks Roger.... I've driven thru St Louis for many years. Seems like there is always major constuction somewhere. On my way (CO to FL) I usually end up going thru Paducah (sp?) KY. I will probable exit I70 near Wentzville taking Highway 40, which if I recall turns into I64. I will turn south on I270 down to I55. I will follow I55 to near the southern of IL, then head across to Paducah. Any of that route that I mention torn up or under construction at this time? Thanks again.

Fastdraw, Just rode most of that route today on the bike. (all the way down to Arkansas on I55). No major construction along the route. A couple of minor lane closures for bridge work, but not that serious. Make sure you watch your speed on 64 and 55 within about 10 miles of I270. Both are special enforcement zones, so heavy enforcement and double fines. Travel safe.

farmerbyron,

Just a note about OC in Missouri: while it may be legal in the state, each city can pass their own laws that override state laws (on OC only, not CC). So unless you want to trust your research on the dozens and dozens of little municipalities that make up metro St. Louis (most of which do not post their OC laws online), I'd avoid open carry altogether while you're in the city.

Concealed carry is state-wide and is unable to be overridden by city laws.

FastDraw,

I travel I-55 from St. Louis to Cape Girardeau periodically, and it's not uncommon to see troopers along the entire route. Sometimes I see none, other times I see several. I have concluded it's not worth it to me to speed, especially since I'm often carrying what might be considered a small arsenal by some standards.

Be careful. St. Louis drivers are not IMO known for their courteousness nor their passivity. But I guess you know that if you have driven through here for years.

Thanks Grady, I done that often. Sometimes I even cross the river at Cape Girardeau and head down toward Cairo on Highway 3 (I believe that is the right number)... It saves a few miles that way but does require that I travel in the unfriendly gun state of IL more than I want to.

There are no enforcable off-limits places in Missouri except for federal ones. The law lists 17 or so places you can't carry then goes on to say it is not a criminal offense, but can subject you to removal. Which is to say, it is the same as any other place.

Carry in bars and every other listed off limits place: OK
Carry in private property with an 11x14 sign with 1" letters: OK
Carry everywhere else that isn't federal: OK
Carry in schools: NOT OK (federal law stops you since you aren't authorized by the state)
Federal buildings (like the Arch): NOT OK
National Parks (like around the Arch): NOT OK (yet)

571.107 Endorsement does not authorize concealed firearms, where:
(1) Any Police, Sheriff, or Highway Patrol Office or Station,
(2) Within twenty-five feet of any Polling Place on any Election Day.
(3) Any Correctional Facility.
(4) Any Courthouse or Building used by a Court.
(5) Any Government Meeting including State Legislature.
(6) Government Owned Buildings except Public Housing.
(7) Bars.
(8) Secured parts of Airports.
(9) Prohibited by Federal Law;
(10) All Schools (Including Colleges);
(11) Child Care Facilities.
(12) Casino
(13) Amusement Park.
(14) Any Church
(15) Private Property with 11X14 sign with one inch letters.
(16) Arenas and Stadiums seating over 5,000.
(17)Publicly accessible Hospitals.

Possession of a firearm in a vehicle on the premises shall not be a criminal offense so long as the firearm is
not removed from the vehicle or brandished while the vehicle is on the premises; is applicable to Items 1, 2,
3, 4, 5, 7, 8, 10, 12, 13, 14, 15, 16 and 17 above.

Carrying of a concealed firearm in a location specified in subdivisions 1) to (17) of subsection 20 of this
section by any individual who holds concealed carry endorsement issued pursuant to this section shall not be
a criminal act but may subject the person to denial to the premises or removal from the premises.

There is a quirky Missouri law about buses that outlaws handguns and doesn't exempt permit holders. You can't carry on a bus.

Stay out of East St. Louis, IL. Really.

Sorry for the late response. Just saw your post. After a trip up I-44 then north on I-55 then right to cross the bridge in St. Louis into the PR of Illinois, we continue through IL east on I-64, then south on I-57 then east on I-24 entering Paducah, KY. Paducah is where we generally stop for gas and grub.

Thanks tiwee...... That route makes sense. Have you ever travel south on I-55 toward the southern tip of IL? I've done this several times just to avoid driving in IL. I know..... how crazy is that??

Thanks for all of the input. I have made my reservation for a hotel at 201 S. 20th street. It is like 16 blocks from the ball park so we may not drive and park in the parking lot but that would mean the carry piece will have to stay at the room. Maybe I will drive anyways. If I read all the responses right, the general consensus is that carry is legal everywhere except the ballpark, arch & fed. property, and the bus. Kind of sucks that the 2 main places I plan on attending are no go areas.

What kind of mass transit does St. Louis have besides a bus? I thought I saw something about an amtrak or something. I don't know much about mass transit, I'm a country boy. Also, how about some recommendations for a place to eat downtown? Oh and is the zoo good to carry or not? Haven't decided if there will be enough time for that or not.
