Here's where it went wrong. As bad as their behavior may have been, cursing, "disrespecting" people, and drinking are not killing offenses. Some days, you have to suck it up.

I may have given him props for flashing his creds to "calm them down", but issuing an ultimatum to rowdy drunks was foolish.

It's that old saying, "When all you have is a hammer, all your problems look like nails."

That's why I am big on keeping in shape, learning and practicing non-lethal self-defense, and most importantly, practicing the ancient art of HOW TO AVOID TROUBLE.

Some people treat their roscoe like a talisman. It's not. It's to be used in only a VERY limited set of circumstances. Also, this guy isn't a Marvel superhero and it's not his job to keep others from being "disrespected" or to discipline others for cursing.

Someone is lying, either the cop or the hockey fans. Maybe the rest of the people on the train backed up the hockey fans story . If it happened like the cop claims it did I can't imagine him getting in all of this trouble. At any rate, losing his career and possibly going to jail for 15 years is a pretty high price to pay. Murderers do less than 15 years in lots of cases.

How exactly did he "show" his weapon? Did he un-holster it and wave it around, or did he just left up his cover shirt displaying his badge and gun?

I am very disappointed that the Transit Police didn't extend any professional courtesy to the off-duty officer but rather arrested him. Cops don't make it a habit arresting other cops. Leo's are all on the same side...especialy when requesting cover! Something doesn't set right with me on this story.

Nah....this is BS! He identified himself as LEO and the subjects were causing a disturbance. He was in his full right, on the clock, or off.

Where are the "assaulting a police officer" charges. Is NY, NJ that ****'d up that you arrest the cop and hand the perpetrators a protection order from the court!

I hope for his sake he got some uninvolved witnesses. This story continues to sound as though something is missing. I have been on those trains after games and some of the fans can definitely get rowdy but I have not seen it go beyond that.

Silly question (that I'd really like answered by our LEO friends):

Would he have been "in the right" if he had been On Duty?

If so, I think that he is getting "railroaded" for some reason. Unless he's lying through his teeth...

How does an off-duty LEO get charged with illegal possession of a firearm? Interesting...
I agree. Cops get away with a lot worse than this every day. Something is going on we don't know about.

By "professional courtesy" do you mean cover it up, lie, ignore the truth, ignore the law, etc.? Are you saying cops are above the law?

I think there's more to the story, but the MTA police did an initial investigation and found sufficient evidence to arrest Hendrick. Hendrick, himself said "Unfortunately, it might have not been the best thing to do". Sounds like he's admitting doubt and/or poor judgment . . . with a lethal weapon.

It's up to the courts/lawyers now.
