I agree that this kind of publicity isn't helpful. On the other hand ... if the NRA and other supporters jump on it quick enough and take a public stand that this is NOT what gun advocates support, it could potentially be a positive thing.

The moment I read that I saw the word "vigilantes" in their groups name I became concerned. That word will have very negative reactions no matter how you say it. There are so many better group names they could have chosen. Couldn't they have thought of a group name that might not be taken out of context? Add to the fact that they carry their handguns in their waistband without a holster.
This group should have done things somewhat differently.

Armed UW Students Called "Vigilantes". They use Facebook to organize patrols. (WA) Mods, might be worth combining the two... |

I am from MO and we are trying to get CC on campus. i am 23 with ccw and i am still in school. i was looking forward to being able to exercise this right as there were many violent crimes committed on campus lately. but things like this are what makes it frowned upon. there may be 1000 ppl who may carry and be lawful but it only takes this one retard to ruin it for everyone.

I wouldn't worry about him too much. He will probably shoot himself by accident while showing off his mad quick draw skills. I imagine he spends alot more time at keggers than he does at the range.

Very little negative impact.
I don’t know how much damage these guys are doing to the cause. I suspect it is pretty small.
Yes – unsafe handling, foolish statements, baiting, etc. Here’s the BUT – looking at these guys from a sheeple perspective - Sheeple don’t realize the unsafe gun handling practices, that’s what they see in the movies – so its probably just fine. - Sheeple don’t know its unsafe/unwise to carry w/o a proper holster. - Many Sheeple probably admire them for taking a stand against crime. - Most Sheeple are not aware of the potential civil & criminal issues that follow a SD shooting. So its not an issue to them. The general public will not share most of the issues educated gun owners have with these guys. The sheeple either don’t like guns or are fine with them. “Small stuff” like safe handling and baiting are issues they will probably not notice. I give these guys the following grades. A for guts. F for safety & gun handling. C for public opinion impact. What if they actually shoot someone (a BG). 1- They will most likely have a large mess to deal with, considering their training (or lack of), attitudes and public statements. 2- Public opinion won’t be affected. There are hundreds of (good) reported SD shootings each year and it does not seem to sway public opinion much. |
