I think the answer depends on the context. If you are only storing it when you go to sleep and are going to put it back on in the morning, loaded would make most sense since want it ready to run in an emergency.

If you are *leaving* it in the safe, I would say unloaded. Thinking being if there is every a fire it would be more risk to emergency personnel.

YMMV.

1) I like the idea of some type of safe. Especially Gunvault brand that seems to open using finger prints. So, my question is, if I use type type of safe do you think it is ok to store the gun loaded?

2) Any other suggestion besides Gunvault and the Homak?

3) I assume that being stored in one of these devices whenever it is not on me negates the need for a manual safety on a gun?
I personally have 2 gun vault safes. One on each side of my bed. One for me and one for the wife. The guns are definitely loaded and ready to go! However, make sure you practice the safest way to take it out of the safe. As someone stated earlier, practice opening the safe. Do it quickly, quietly and safely over and over again so you're muscle memory can take over if you're ever woken up in the middle of the night in need of quick actions.

It's just like I said before about manual's safety's not being trusted. The one between your ears is the only one you should rely on.

All of the above goes for carrying too. Manual safety's out and mental safety in. Loaded always and ready for use. If you ever had to use it quickly, you'll want to be able to draw it quickly and safely and not worry about racking the slide to use it.

+1 on the above; I also let all my kids accompany me to the range and see what it's like to actually fire the weapons when they get old enough. Once they get to experience it, no more questions. That said, if I'm not home everything is either trigger locked or in a safe. With the parents permission, I'm planning on the same course of action with my grandkids. I love my brood... =)

Digital lock gun safe in the home office and bio-metric one in the truck, not on my side.. in the safe!

I don't know if anyone's mentioned this yet or not? But shooting is a great family activity IMO! At my house it's treated just like camping, fishing, hunting or any other of a number of family bonding activities!
Take the kids and wife with you to the range and enjoy the experience. Join a club and have even more fun. When done with safety in mind shooting is very relaxing and rewarding.
And once they're all involved the safety becomes common knowledge and carry's the next generation on with our fight for our rights. ;-)

At times it's not your kids who find the loaded gun under the the bed or in a drawer. They bring their friends into the house and tend to hide from each other or snoop around and in the process stumble upon the guns. All other guns should be in a safe or have a trigger guard.

I have the little ones. They are being trained as we speak.

A good resource for training them....

I know im may get some grief for this but i started my kids out young teaching them about firearms. When im not home the guns are locked up. when i am i have the one that i carry laying on the table with me there to supervise at all times. If one of my kids started to touch it i would tell them no My son and daughter shot their first handgun at 5 years old. now at 18 and 16 they are well versed in firearms and i trust them both completely. my son who is allmost 19 is in the army. At 14 he was out shooting a buddy of mine who was a former recon marine
