Good grief, Hopyard, I live here and am in the clinic every week--it was never posted, legally or not, in 2008!

OK, let's make this fun with a $100 bet, and I'll contact Mayo Clinic Security and have them provide official documentation of the October 2008 status regarding posting.

Is it a bet?

I promise I'll spend the money on ammo...

While it doesn't precisely address the posting issue, it does give an example of someone being escorted from the facility for carrying inside-- "Soon afterwards, two officers showed up and very politely informed me that it was against MN law and Mayo policy to have a firearm in the building."

Mayo

I live about the same distance as C4 and they used to have signs but the rules say one per door and they have to damn many doors so no problem with posting. They still have a couple of places but overall no posting. I do not disarm when I go in there - ever. The country hospital on the other hand has fewer doors and are still strongly posted. My own doctor and his nurse are very pro gun so no problem when I do visits to him. Overall not that many places in general where it is posted anymore in Rochester.

It's clear to me that this fell under the umbrella that you can be asked to leave, or to take your firearm out to your vehicle, by a property owner--no posting required, since it is the owner's right. This occurs occasionally at places like WalMart, where OC folks are asked to take their firearm out of the store since they are scaring the sheep. Mayo does not want their sheep frightened.

There are no postings, and I doubt that the security officers said it was "against MN law" since it isn't unless there is a posting! Mayo Clinic is sharper than that, so I have some doubts as to the accuracy of the story that's told.

We both know that Mayo has both the $$$ and the management skills to put in place a protocal about signage that would easily cover every single entrance, to that's a moot point.

You mention that "They still have a couple of places...". Could you tell me specifically which buildings and entrances...I'll go look for myself. I don't issue this as a challenge, but would like to resolve this question. Perhaps the psych areas? I can't recall the name of it, but the building south of Saint Marys Hospital, across from the Emergency entrance? Let me know.

In terms of Mayo's motivation for removing the postings, I was told by Mayo staff people that it was due to patient remarks. It seems that the postings made the community and clinic look to them to be dangerous because those signs were needed to keep guns out....go figure! Trust me, as an organization Mayo is anything but gun-friendly, so again they acted to calm those insured sheep coming through the door.

Bottom line--I see no postings and I carry there all the time.

And virtually every instance of this happening, if reported to WalMart Corporate HQ, results in the store manager being "educated" about WM's support of local laws regarding OC, and an apology sent to the gun owner involved.

I would definitely agree with that. I'm quite a bit more observant than most people, and my wife is constantly noticing little things that I miss.

I think that for the most part, people DON'T notice.

But for another explanation - well, have you ever watched Buffy, the Vampire Slayer? (The series, not the movie). They offered a pretty good explanation about how people can see all this stuff happening in their town and not "notice". I'd say it's a similar mindset for most people.

No quite frankly they don't. In my OC travels, less than 10% of people notice anything. Of the 10% that do, less than 2% make any kind of deal about it, even a wrinkled up nose.

I sat on an ice chest in the back of my dad's pick up truck while the folks we were in Walmart. Someone had to protect the hunting gear.

I was OC sitting in a parking lot with a SLEW of people walking by. A group of 3 latino's noticed and mentioned something about crazy gringo (in spanish) as they walked away faster. A guy who had on a diversity shirt (picturing 25 or so types of guns) noticed and gave me the thumbs up. One lady noticed and got wide eyed then smiled nervously at me. The other 200+ people that walked down my row in the half hour had NO clue.
I had my G-22 in a Serpa II. Black gun, black holster, jeans and a light gray tucked in t-shirt. I was up in the bed of the truck, the gun was at most people's eye level.
