Edit - I should rephrase that. Untrained people in PUBLIC PLACES with guns scare me.
I have to agree with Rollo on this one. I think that at minimum there should be some training in manual of arms, and the 4 basic rules of safe gun handling.

We are required to have training to get a CPL in Michigan and I am gratefull for what I learned there, and also what I continue to learn here.

Maybe they should..... I'm normally against squealing on someone, but just imagine the effect this clown could have on someone who's straddling the fence on CCW and guns in general.

He needs to find another line of work.

When I run into idiots like this I generally give them a big crappy grin and say something to the extent of 'Isnt it great that people like you dont get to make the decision' ;)

A few weeks ago my mother was even rambling on about she didnt think we should be able to carry in state parks BECAUSE some teen girl was just grabbed by two guys or something...not sure if they had guns or not.

Uh....duh....if someone there had HAD a gun they may have been able to STOP these guys.
I hate calling my own mother ignorant and naive, but well...

Why does this scare me? Because I don't want to be sitting in a crowded mall food court with my niece with a bunch of people carrying a gun that have fired it "that one time at the range". People that have no idea how to identify a threat. People that don't know to check whats beyond their target if they need to fire. To me, people that don't understand the basic concepts of carrying a gun for self defense are as dangerous as the criminals that I carry a gun to protect myself and my family from.
I definitely agree with the idea that, by their own choice, everyone who carries concealed SHOULD get range time in and maybe get pointers from someone who already knows how to shoot well.

Guns are a funny thing. Our rights are to have them and bear them, but they are a very deadly tool.
I think making sure we know how to use a gun is simply part of the responsibility of owning one and especially if we're carrying it.

Im not sure that I like the idea of being forced to be licensed to carry, however, or forced to pay for training for a day about things I already know and have known since I was 11 or so.

I'm all for training - but - don't like to see fee's or other requirements put the right to protect self and family out of the common man's (or woman's) reach financially.

$20 a year in Alabama for your CC Permit is reasonable.

Several hundred required in some states is out of the reach of a lot of folk’s financial means.

One local PD (Orange Beach, Alabama) occasionally offers free basic handgun training to it’s citizens. Now that’s a good idea.

Just because you're allowed doesn't mean you should...

We have a proportionally high number of LTCF holders here.
1 of every 20 people is licensed to carry. None of those people have taken any kind of state mandated 'CCW class'. Yet we don't have more accidents, crimes committed by licensees, 'bad shoots' due to ignorance of the law, or instances of licensees shooting in self defense, missing their intended target, and hitting innocents than states that do mandate training.

So, what is there to be scared of?
No disrespect...first of all, I'm not LE....I believe that if you wish to take the responsibilty of carrying a firearm with you, you should practice and know it's limitations and yours as well...that being said...we all know that statistically the chances of any one of us needing the firearm is slim...we are all practicing for the big game hoping we never getting called in to play....LE on the other hand are constantly putting themselves into situations where the use of a firearm is greater than the average citizen WHO HAS EVERY RIGHT TO CARRY LEGALLY IF ALLOWED TO DO SO...friends that I have that are 'on the job' admit I practice more than they do....I asked them how'd they feel if they knew the pitcher on the mound hasn't thrown the ball in a year and they put him in the World Series for all the marbles...the answer always came back....Why would they do such a thing? The ah-hah moment....all the marbles.....practice with what you carry...be diligent and responsible, to yourself and those around you.

No disrespect here either, but that's all basic kindergarten stuff when I was growing up. "Most" of what is called training today used to be called COMMON SENSE. Whenever I buy a new gun I take it out to the boonies to shoot it, to make sure that it will shoot. (have yet to find one that didn't shoot) If I hit the target I'm shooting at, "practice" is over. I can't think of anything that I could do, and do it right, that I had to practice to continue to do it right. Public places or any place, whats the difference when you carry for "PERSONAL PROTECTION"? If someone has to practice, practice, practice in order to hit a man sized target threatening him(or her)within the accepted danger zone,(20 ft. or less) "that person" is dangerous! Key Word is PERSONAL PROTECTION, not combat or some Hollywood scenario to simply entertain. If it's the real world you live in, just get real.
