You are correct on the LEO practice/training.

I know that I, w/a CCW for for the last 3 years, have more hrs training (96 hrs) & more practice rnds (thousands more) than the average LEO on the job for the same 3 yrs.

LEO reply

There's all kinds of people doing this job just as any other. Take 'em with a grain of salt. I tell people all thetime who want to protect themselves, mainly thier houses from burglars to buy a gun. BUT with one caveat, Get some kind of training. Don't blow $400 on a gun an refuse to pay an even better spent $200 or so on real training. I've told my department folks, that if they want to make money and educate, start offering training. i think people would eat it up. The biggest problem is the liability they say.

Too much PC in this country!

Who said I don't practice? I said I've never been forced to take a state mandated class. I've had plenty of real training and I'm always seeking more. In fact, I'm doing another course this weekend. I took the course required for a Utah CFP voluntarily.

My point is, the state mandated courses are a joke. The mindset that makes a responsible armed citizen, or even just a responsible gun owner, cannot be taught. State mandated courses offer no benefit (other than a false sense of 'safety') to society. They are nothing more than stumbling blocks placed in the path of unarmed citizens who are trying to become armed citizens.

Again, plenty of states don't require any training. I'm sure there are lots and lots of licensees in PA that have never had any training at all. Those people are not shooting wildly and hitting innocents. Untrained, armed people just aren't a problem. Same situation in many states.

I don't understand how anyone who claims to be a supporter of the RKBA can favor requirements and restrictions (a.k.a.infringements) that don't do any good whatsoever, and are a substantial obstacle for many people.

I can't remember if I mentioned it on this forum before but, I think that safe gun handling should be mandatory curriculum in elementary school.

On a better note...Got our prints done today at the Sheriff department for Utah (it's already in Fedex)....When the Sheriff asked why we were getting prints done and we told him, he was

His take on CWP was that MD needs it.....But that it would likely never happen....

Not all of us grew up with guns.

I really hope you don't think that is the extent of the skill involved. Be open to change, take a class, shoot competition, read a book on handgun skills. You might learn something new, and even have fun.

I can't think of anything that I could do, and do it right, that I had to practice to continue to do it right.
Ever take a few months off from driving? I have due to an injury, and was amazed at the skill degradation that can take place in a short period of time.

I agree! But there are also plenty of LEO out there equally untrained. Or so arrogant because the are LEO that they ignore basic gun safety.

I don't want government restrictions or mandated anything...what I'd like is to see more personal responsibility by people that I might get hurt by.....if you buy a hedge trimmer....you should know that you may cut off a finger with it if used incorrectly....a chain saw? We all saw that movie....a firearm is a tool and all I meant to say was that people that get one, ought to understand that 'I'm sorry' won't pull the bullet back....

I actually have both NV LE status and CCW. I have a CCW for several reasons, one was NV was charging $25 for each background check on a firearm purchase but CCW holders were exempt because of having their background check done already to have the CCW (why this didn't include LE... I have no idea), this was costing me enough each year to apply for my CCW. Second, I could now legally conceal carry different pistols that weren't covered by my department general orders, e.g. Makarovs, .45acp revolvers, SIG 230..etc..

I served in the military before becoming a policeman, so I wasn't always a policeman and won't always be a policeman.... that's exactly why I'm so Pro-2nd Amendment..... I really disagree with cops that have the "We should be the only ones to have guns attitude" it very much creates the Us vs. Them issues that you really see back in the northeast metro areas. There are several cases of armed citizen saves the day stories before the cops ever get to the scene.... which I will openly admit..in a critical situation and seconds count we are only minutes away.

$20 a year in Alabama for your CC Permit is reasonable.

Several hundred required in some states is out of the reach of a lot of folk’s financial means.

One local PD (Orange Beach, Alabama) occasionally offers free basic handgun training to it’s citizens. Now that’s a good idea.
What a great state!!

I think Texas is on the pricey side myself, but its all priorities i suppose.
