While "working the road" as an MP, we where told to place an empty mag. in our M-9's, so that people would "think it's loaded."

As a young E-4 I brought the issue up to my SGT that that was a STUPID idea. We got the MAJ to change his mind and let us holster our pistols with a full mag. but not one in the chamber. Better...but still dumb.

I'm a big believer in "You play like you practice" (my football teams have that beat into their head every fall!) There where units in Iraq that rolled out the gate WITHOUT a round in the chamber! (That's how they roll in the states....I'm sure).
I would have kicked my guys butts if they didn't roll with one in the chamber!!

I don't think you will ever see CC on military bases....sad but true...

My friend (no military background) is like a lot of folks in thinking on an Army Post or other Military Installation – EVERYBODY HAS A GUN.

Reality is far from that.

Pull out a map of either Georgia, Alabama, Mississippi or Florida – randomly pick any rural neighborhood and they will be better armed than any military installation.

On any military installation (In the US) – the only armed people are the MP’s and they are only carrying a 9mm Beretta. Some soldiers may be armed at the firing range but that’s about it.

If you see a convoy of hummers on the road in the US – National Guard or other – you might think “Someone would be crazy to attack THEM” but even if they are going to the firing range – NO ONE’S ARMED! You drive to the range – They issue the firearms – you shoot \ qualify – TURN THEM BACK IN and drive back unarmed again.

That’s just the way it is. No off duty CC on base. Even the MP’s go to work unarmed – check out their weapon – do their shift – turn the weapon back in and go home…
When you pull out the map find Camp Shelby, MS. Stop by the PX. You will notice plenty of armed military. Even joggers in PT. The readiness of their weapon might be a different story.

Yep, when I was standing guard duty in the military it was done with an unloaded weapon. Sorry, but I have to laugh every time bad things happen, not laugh at the circumstances, just at the stupidity and ignorance of those in charge always asking..."How Did This Happen"?

I think it is totally outrageous that no one is armed on military bases, and personal firearms are prohibited.

How did this happen, anyway?

When I was in the National Guard on some TDY at a National Guard base in CA back in 1976, personal guns were everywhere. I had 4 in my room. Others had more. We shot all the time and no one batted an eye. No one got shot, either. We even had a reloading station set up at Range Control.

And I believe he must have carried spare clips, given the number of wounded, unless some were hit by the same round. But on the positive side, the female LEO who stopped Hasan is going to make it. Her picture on Twitter looks like she's young and not very big, but she sure did her job well. We grow 'em tough in Texas!
In my 32 years with DoD and driving onto my different military installations, to include Fort Hood, the procedure at the front gate is as follows:

Drive up to guard shack ( your car may or may not have a DoD / Military parking decal issued by your own base or installation you are arriving at )
Show your DoD/Military ID and state destination, where as you might be asked to show your orders or state name of contact you are to meet at said destination
Depending on base and alert status...you may be asked to pull over for an inspection of your car and it's contents...and if so, you will be asked to provide your license, owners card, and insurance.
Guard will mirror under your car and ask you to pop the hood to inspect engine space...and a cursory check of any packages, equipment, baggage, and glove compartment / console may be performed.

Here is the bad part...at no time is your person searched. You can be carrying as many guns as you can conceal on your person or be wrapped in as much C4 as you can hide without looking bulky.
The shooter at Fort Hood arrived in his BDU's...which means he probably had his pockets filled with extra loaded magazines for the two weapons he had concealed in his waistband under his BDU shirt ( which is untucked and could easily conceal much more. )

Thank God he was put down fast by the female military contractor first responder.

My prayers are with all the victims and their families...

I think you will find the situation was handled by the Ft. Hood Police Department. - a civilian contractor - who handles most of the on-post disturbances, rather than the MPs. The MPs handle base security, not routine law enforcement.

May I politely request we practice a little OPSEC? There's no sense in giving the next guy a how-to manual.

Thanks,
Herk

I had a thought:

If you are that worried about your personal safety and the likelihood of being shot at... DON'T JOIN THE MILITARY!!
