As a resident of California, I urge you to reconsider LA County if you care about CCW. Because it's one of the largest urban areas in CA, the Sheriff has a strict no-issue policy. You will not get one under any circumstances, be it you need to carry $1,000,000 to the bank every day, or every single gang has targeted you for an imminent attack.

Of course, if you're a political buddy or celebrity, you can already expect your permit in the mail by the time you move in.

If you're willing commute through our horrible public transportation system, you might want to look at some rural counties with sheriffs that have no problem issuing for personal protection.

Now if nothing will dissuade you from coming here, make sure to join one of our gun rights groups, like Calguns. We could use every person we can get.

Here's a map with CA counties and their issuance policies.

When the Heller decision gets incorporated to apply to all of the states, the current lawsuits challenging CA's "may issue" CCW process will proceed. There is a very good chance that the "may issue" will remain but with the issuing agencies being forced to recognize "self defense" as legitimate good cause. That will effectively make CA a "shall issue" CCW state. Sometime in 2010.

For LA area, live in Orange County. Irvine is one of the best rated cities in the US to live. OC will be much more lenient on CCW issue, especially when the current sheriff gets ousted. Very conservative area that doesn't appreciate LA attitudes. Riverside and San Bernadino are also more CCW-friendly but not as family-friendly, more crimes.

CCW in CA is issued typically by the agency in your area of residence. A CCW is valid throughout ALL of CA, regardless of how CCW-hostile any particular county is. Hopefully that will change with 2010 and agencies being forced to level the playing field.

Visit www.Calguns.net for more info.

Last note, as a lifelong CA resident, come out here for the weather or if you must for a special occupational opportunity. Otherwise, you can probably find better quality of life elsewhere. Make very sure that any job offered is exactly what you want before you make the leap!

My advice is to move. It must be possible to get CCW permits as all those big stars have armed bodyguards. I suspect that it is impossible to the average guy to get one.

If you are a movie star or politician it want be a problem. If you are not it will be a problem. When I left California there was only one county where the sheriff was issueing and all the other sheriffs were rallying against him. Bad move.

Everything in this world has a price. For a price, you can get almost anything in this world.

Ever considered Alaska? Stated Troopers are hiring! plenty of oil/slope jobs, healthcare jobs are still growing... what line of work are you in?

As far as Cali goes... go to Orange County. Spent 9 years in Cali when I was in the Corps, only place I will ever go back to is the OC.
