My $.02 "BEST" is going to vary with each particular gun IMHO. Buy a mess of quality HP carry ammo and test it in your choice of carry gun. Go from there.

While I may sound a bit naive about ballistics, I have to say that I feel 100% confident w/ Wal-Mart's Winchester USA 147gr JHP for my XD-9 subbie. That ammo has proven to be a consistent feeder and shooter from my subbie. I don't know the fps, ft-pounds, etc from the 3" barrel, but I'm confident that with proper shot-placement, that ammo racing out of my subbie will do the job right.

For those of you with 3" barrel guns I believe Magsafe is now making a round designed for short barrels. Although flash and recoil are increased. I'm still going to stick with normal Gold Dots, Corbon DPX, or Hornady TAP in my Kahr PM40. I don't need to volunteer for extra flash and recoil in this little beast.

I, like Blackhawk, like the information on the tacticalforums link. 147 grain Winchester SXT and Speer GD's are my choice, especially in a XD-9 Subcompact.

A friend of mine just gave me some Hyda-shocks and Golden Golden Sabers in 147gr, have not had a chance to try them out in my Sig yet. Right now I keep two mags loaded with Remington JHP in 1214gr, It works reliably and is accurate. don't know about stopping power, it is hard to get the more exotic JHP's here in Canada and expensive when you do. $25 (plus 14% tax) for Remington JHP in .45acp x 50.
