+p, +p+, what?!

Probably not the right forum, but what is this +p and +p+ I keep seeing people refer to? Call me a little ignorant fellow and educate me!

You have the standard pressure/velocity cartridge. Then you have a little bit higher(+P) then even higher yet(+P+).

The "P" stands for pressure. -----EDIT: thinkin' on it, or does it stand for "power" ??

So when I hear about guns designed for +P and +P+, how new of guns must I look for? Or how will I know?

This type of ammo has been around for years. We are not talking antique now but many years. You can check manufacturer's specs. to find out if a particular gun can handle the higher pressure.

most all new guns can fire the +p+/+p ammo. if not the owners manual will tell you not to do so. i known my old j-frame is not rated for it, but i carry +p+ in it (that's what they issue for carry). i don't "q" with +p+, i use 148gr wad cutter ammo. i have seen some of the older j-frames lock up when shot with +p+ ammo, but this was after a 50 round course of fire. i don't think 5 or 10 rounds will hurt the old pin barrel j-frame.

+p mean it is above the standard pressure and power for a rated cartridge as rated by saami

+P+ mean it exceeds power and pressure of the +p

what can happen when you use +P in a gun not designed for it?

In my case I got off light ... broken barrel link in my RIA 1911a1.

Best--nothing
mostly--- excessive wear and tear
worst--- something breaks or kaboom and you get hurt
sorry you had to find out
