Unhappy AD: Some Respect for Nine Millimeter

After fifty years of shooting guns, I had my first accidental discharge tonight. Fortunately, I was pointing my 226 in a safe direction. I shot a hole through the wood floor and all the way through a copper pipe in the basement. We have a leak now and the pipe is wrapped in plumbing tape awaiting the plumber.

The hole in the floor, which has a splintery exit, and the through- and-through of the copper pipe reminds me that a 9 mil is not a small caliber. Sometimes I think folks in the forums have begun to think of the 9 as just past a 22 in terms of effectiveness.

The holes were made with a Speer Gold Dot 124 grain. I hope I never get hit with one.

And I always thought I could hide behind a copper pipe for cover...Glad all is ok, even if it's a bit soggy.

I assume We includes a wife. If so, did you receive the obligatory scolding?

Glad that nobody was hurt. That is the main thing that all are uninjured.
Ears Ringing?

Just helps to make my point to all who say that carrying in a horizontal shoulder is being unsafe because everyone around is getting muzzle covered.
Just remember that when you carry at the waist - everybody on the floor below you has the tops of their heads muzzle covered.
You just can't see them through the floor.
But a wood floor will not stop a bullet.

Thanks for being up front and posting ....... it matters not IMO how old we are or how long we have been shooting - an ND is always around the corner - potentially.

Glad no more problems than you have ... material things are at least mendable!!

My last ND was with a shottie - a few years ago - inexcusable in essence but thanks to rule #2 - more harm to my pride than anything really vital.

Stay safe.

Good example of why the four rules are so important. The safe direction is what kept people safe.

Glad nobody got hurt.
