.45 Gold Dot
I would like to hear from members that use Speer Gold Dot ammo. Do you shoot 185gr., 200gr. +P or 230gr.? Why do you use what you use and in which pistol?
I am particularly interested in anyone that uses this ammo in a 3" gun. Thanks |

They make 230 grain "Short Barrel" ammo that is different than the regular 230gr. That may be something you would be interested in.

I'm a big fan of the 200+P, shoots like a champ in my G30, dead to point of aim. And my goodness what a wallop on the business end!

When I carried a .45ACP I wasn't too concerned about bullet weight when I used premium ammo.
I doubt any of the Gold Dot will disappoint. |

I run the 230gr Gold dot or 230 Hydra-Shok, through my SA Mil-Spec Micro Compact. I just believe in the 230gr, even in a 3" 1911. Some say the 230gr won't expand or penetrate through a 3" pistol... here's an e-mail response from Federal concerning the 230gr.
">From: "Ives, Ron" <Ron.Ives@ATK.com> >To: >Subject: RE: Hydra-Shok JHP >Date: Tue, 1 Feb 2005 12:26:37 -0600 > >The shortest we have data for is a 3.2 inch Colt > >820 ft/sec > >13.0 penetration > >.675 inch expansion" The GD seems to have a little better performance in tests I have seen so I figure it will perform at least as well. The 200gr feeds just fine to, but muzzle flip increases to a point I'm not comfortable with. YMMV. Any quality SD ammo should serve you well.

Thanks for the input guys, I think that I will just order some different weights and see which my gun likes the most.

I used to carry Speer GD 230gr Short Barrel in my Glock 30. I have since changed to Corbon DPX 185gr +p. In my 3" Kimber, I carry Corbon DPX 160 grainers. I've had good luck with the function of GD's in six of my guns in which I tried them. I am currently only carrying the 180gr GD SB 40 cal in the HK P2000 and 90gr 380 in the P-3AT. Gold Dots are excellent performers.
