10MM the same as 40S&W?
I've heard that the factory self defense loads for the 10mm are "watered down" so to speak to the same power levels as 40S&W and are no better than factory 40S&W defense loads is this true? I believe if I'm not mistaken that double tap, buffalo bore, blackhills, winchester and corbon make true full power 10MM ammo is this right? But what about federals hydrashock or hst loads, are these full power 10mm? For the record this isn't a caliber war type thing I'm just trying to find out where to easily obtain full power 10mm loads for my carry gun(which is looking to be dan wesson bobtail commander) when I get it thanks.

10mm loaded by the major manufacturers is watered down, closer to 40 S&W ballistics. To realize the full potential of the 10mm, you need to handload. DT is a little hot and I see no reason other than bragging rights to fire their "nuclear" loaded ammunition. I load 10mm commercially and see no reason to push the envelope, but I do load faster than the main factories.
I shoot full snort loads for hunting, but my defensive loads are about 100fps less than that, maybe a bit slower even. There's no reason to unleash 700+fpe at someone when 550-600fpe will do the job. That's the versatility of the 10mm. I absolutely love the 10mm. You can buy DT ammo straight from them or at Midway; Buffalo Bore, Black Hills, and the others can be had there too.

As one simple example, consider DoubleTap's hotter 10mm and .40cal loads with the same bullet weight out of the same length barrel:
10mm -- DoubleTap JHP Gold Dot 155gr, 750 ft-lbs @ 1475 fps (4.5" bbl). .40cal -- DoubleTap JHP Gold Dot 155gr, 590 ft-lbs @ 1310fps (4.5" bbl).

Same Diameter and bullet weights just one moves slightly slower.

It comes down to, as already noted, folks not needing full house 10mm loads to get the job done, self defense wise. At least not against people.
You know what the practical difference between those two loads above is? Nothing. Shave a hundred or two fps seciond of of them? Still not much.

In my limited experience and this non scientific.
10mm hornady has the most recoil 10mm hydra shok a slightly less than the hornaday. 10mm ball a little less again. 180 gr .40 a slight lessor recoil than all 10mm. What does this mean, probably that the charts are about correct and the 10mm beats the .40 hands down. |

With a 10mm you can have 180 gr moving along over 1,220 FPS. The 200 gr moves real good too. The 40 S&W won't do that.

Real 10mm
The best of the "real" 10mm is from the specialty loaders like Double Tap, Cor BOn, and Black Hills. All of the other commercial stuff, with the possible exception of the Silvertip, is reduced velocity and power stuff. Sometimes called 10mm -P.

The fact of the matter is that some of the DT loads push the 10mm to low end .41 magnum power. The .40 S&W doesn't even come close to that.
