Federal .45 ACP 185gr +p

I went to the range this morning. I shot a 30 round bullseye course with my G23 .40SW. I did well.

Next I shot my G30 .45ACP. I shot to the right a good bit. So I adjusted the rear sights and was dead on. I was using Federal 185gr +p loads that a friend had given to me. No sense buying ammo when I had some already.

It actually didn't feel too bad while I was shooting it. I went through 100 rounds. Then I shot my 23 again and it felt like a little .22. So I guess those Federal +p loads are pretty hot. I actually spread out my grouping a little bit at 25 yards with the 23 due to the fact that my hand was shaking just a little bit from the .45s.

I know that I will get good COM shots with the +p loads in my 30. But is it really necessary? I was considering maybe just getting some Speer GD 230gr for the 30.

IMO, +p and +p+ loads are NOT necessary.

I'll agree, especially in a .45.

I wrestled with standard pressure v. +P when deciding on carry ammo for my 1911.
Looking at the Federal HST 230gr, +P offers an additional 60FPS and 57 foot/pounds.

While that doesn't seem like much, since handguns are the weak sisters of firearms and the .45 is marginal when it comes to HP velocity, I went for all I could get.

In the HST, the price is the same, my 1911 is rated for it and recoil is not much different, so why not?

That particular round is rated very good in gun tests a few years back.
I think Ed Sanow (sp??) wrote a good book about stopping power and mentioned this round at some point. It's a hottie alright.

I was just wondering if the +p was necesarry for the .45ACP. I think that I could shoot longer of I use standard loads.

I still do use +p or +p+ loads in 9mm. In my G19 I carry either Speer GD 124gr +p or Fed Hy Shok 115gr +p+.

for CCW or hunting...
+P's in 45 are NOT necessary.
+p"s in 38 or 9mm are manditory!
in my humble opinion

I like the +P in .45s with less than a 5" barrel. It gives back the velocity that your compact gun lost with its shorter barrel.

In 9mm, I would not use anything less than +P, and if the pistol will handle it, +P+.

IIUC, a faster .38 round will not do more damage than a standard .38, or do I have the wrong impression?
How about a HP .38?
This is for stopping power, right?
Unless you're shooting through something first, right?
