Big is not always better...it boils down to how you use it. One may have the biggest cannon...but can't hit the barn door.

From a LEO perspective...I can see. From a concealed perspective...too big.

Well, it really depends on the mass of the plate.

I took my HK P7 on vacation with me and I faired very well on the smaller plates, one hit would drop them. On the larger plates a double tap would do the job.

Theoretically, in a real shootout, we're going to shoot more than once as we all know that there is almost no such luck of a one shot stop, so I think two hits to drop a steel plate is no concern.

Regarding plates and such, I was clearing the plate rack with my P7 quicker than I was with my cousins TRP. (this was the smaller plates where one shot would drop the plate)

As always, your mileage may vary.

I have read some much stuff on bullet design and upset etc. I just amnot smart enought to know which exact design is the best and works. But my little EYE OPENER says go with anything with .40 or bigger. A revolver round may work better but all I tried were some of my carry guns and a large mix of 9mm, .40, .45 and some .38 (2 and 4 inch). The big bullets regardless of design worked better on steel and knock down than small bullets regardless of design. I am sure there is data (I have read it) that says smaller bullets of proper design are almost as good as bigger bullets of proper design.
I was impress by the .40 and especially the .45acp. I forgot have potent a round it really is.
Let the debate being!!!!!!!!!

If you are ever attacked by steel plates, then the ability of the .45 to knock them over better than 9mm comes into play.

Most of us, though, are more likely to come under threat from living opponents.....

Yes, you are correct. But regardless of bullet design, I personally would go with the larger and heavier caliber. Just my personal choice. I read the info about bullet design, speed, etc. but I think you odds are improved with a bigger round if you can shoot it accurately and quickly. You should carry what you are comfortable with and what you can shoot and what you can conceal.
Just stating my observations - nothing scientific or controled - just a fun day at the range.

Do you realize how many kids are killed each year by a baseball during a game? We need a law regulating those things as dangerous kid killers, so where is Sara Brady when you need her?

EDIT: sorry I could't resist.

Would you mind posting the source location link or name of the article your read regarding the morgue person.
I'd like to read it as well.

Thank you,

Well that all makes sense, since the .45 has more mass and energy, therefore will transfer more of it into the plates. A simple look at any ballistics chart or some simple calculations would give the same results.

Here is one for you though. Get a 20lb propane bottle and shoot at it will the same calibers weapons the 9mm, 40, and 45. Which one is going to penetrate the propane bottle first? I will give you a clue, it isn't the .45.

I will continue to carry my .45, 9mm or even ..380 each one when the circumstances and place I go dictate. All of them will kill you if I hit what I am aiming for.

Your right, but what people forget is not to kill as such, it's to stop the attack, with people high on drugs.By the way I carry 45-acp, I saw what can happen with 9mm's hitting a 90lb man high on drugs in the chest one time and two in the gut. He was still shooting and trying to kill from 15 to 20 sec's later. The key is to stop the fight.
