Pool Shooting

I was thinking about firing some rounds into my full swimming pool (without swimmers) so I could easily retrieve the expanded bullet. Does anyone know of a reason not to do this?

I have a gunite pool that is 8 feet at deep end, 3 feet at shallow.

I don't know of a reason not to...but...if it did not work and punched a hole in the pool, that would be kinda costly.

Is there a reason you need to do ballistics tests? Are you checking on a local murder or something.

If you do it while your daughter's new boyfriend is over, combine it with a lot of swearing and a phony story about the last boyfriend...could be very effective.
Good luck with the testing!

I see no reason it shouldnt work. Would be fun not to have to load up four new milk jugs with water each time you shoot!

The episode of mythbusters I saw, every round they fired into the pool exploded into many pieces. IIRC the rounds did not go more than a few feet. They even fired a few 50 Cal. rounds that exploded on impact with the water.

The thing you need to remember is that all of the rounds they fired into the pool were rifle rounds. At rifle velocities, they all virtually shattered within a few feet. HOWEVER, they started out the test shooting a pistol into a tank they constructed. The results were:
Quote:
Water tank tests

They built a 'ballistic tank' out of 1" thick acrylic and iron girders. They stuck a block of ballistics gel into the tank that could be raised up and down to different depths.

* 9mm @ 6ft: the bullet went straight through the ballistic gel -- fatal
* 9mm @ 7ft: the bullet went straight through again -- fatal
* 9mm @ 8ft: the bullet only went 1/2" into the gel -- non-fatal
I WOULD NOT recommend shooting a pistol into your pool. As you can see from the results above, at seven feet, the bullet completely penetrated a block of ballistic gelatin and went into the block 1/2" at 8 feet. I'd think you have a real chance of damaging your pool with a pistol cartridge.
