3.5" 1911 chronograph results

Several folks in the past have asked about 45ACP performance out of short barrels. Recently picked up a new RIA Compact Tactical & chronographed some of the loads I had on hand. Surprised at results when compared with same loads chrono'd in 5" & 4 1/4" 1911s. Chamber and barrel diameter?

WWB fmj-797fps
WWB 230jhp-851fps
Rem 230GS-811fps
Rem 185GS+p-1059fps
Fed 230 HydraShock-858fps

yep! I believe any of 'em will work. Settled on the Fed HS for carry due to accuracy but not much difference in any of them except the +p shot a tad low which didn't surprise me since gun shoots dead on w/230gr.

Have shot at least 3 mags of all above loads with no feed problems except +p load. It fed fine but only shot 2 mags of it. One for chronograph and one for accuracy. Fed fine but "barks"!

My 7-round averages this morning from a 3" Colt Defender:

WWB 230gr FMJ- 732fps (274 f/lb energy)

Remington JHP 230gr (100 round value pack stuff)- 746.5fps (284 f/lb energy)

I must say, I'm disappointed in the energy factor, gotta find some factory ammo that is hotter then what I carry in 9mm.

The HydraShock and WWBjhp seem to be loaded hotter than the Rem load and the WWBfmj. Those are the only 230gr loads I've chronographed in the Compact so far. The Rem GS+p load would probably give you at least 1000fps if recoil not too bad for you. The Fed. & WWB loads shoot close enough to POA that for now, that's what I'm going with. The target below is 50rds WWB & several mags of WWB jhp and Fed HS from 7 & 10 yds. I know, I overkilled the target but it was my last one.
