Original post was meant in general, not aimed at any other poster in particular. Mainstream media has been relatively quiet about the gun issue. Fox Network has gone buggy over it. Rush Limbaugh has outright told everybody every day that the next knock at info assault on every thing to do with guns has been going on the following has occured:
We are currently seeing the highest progun government moves in our history. This doesn't mean we drop our vigilance, but it does indicate that we are making progress, now. So why the awful panic? It isn't administration driven, it is shooter driven. It needs to stop so that the rest of us can get some ammo to practice our self defense drills. The threat of gang bangers and burglars is real and here, let us deal with that.

Hey, look at me. I checked the closest WM at 8:00am today, for a change, and low and behold, two boxes of .38spl 100 packs. That was all the pistol ammo they had. I left happy with them both. My wallet was happy someone had bought the other three boxes before I got there.
I bought a S&W J-frame in May, and this is the first ammo I've been able to find for it. It never occurred to me that I'd have this much trouble. I still don't see any sign of the shortage letting up, but at least I got some, any. Now wouldn't it be nice to find some defensive rounds in .45 and .38spl. I guess that's hoping for too much! |

The Great Bullet Bubble.
It has been shown that ammunition manufacturing has keep steady (and increased). It is demand (gun owners) that have caused the shortage. Yes, increased military demand, increased number of cities with SWAT teams, cost of materials, cost of shipping, etc. have all been minor issues. However these issues are not large enough to cause the shortage we see on the shelf. Consumer demand (and stockpiling) is the cause, and because the demand is really a demand bubble (sooner or later people will stop), the manufacturing will only increase to a certain safe level. This leads to one of the interesting conspiracy theories I've heard. The government is driving consumer demand because it will cause this firearm / ammo bubble, and end up putting manufactures out of business when the demand evens out.

I asked the lady in Walmart sporting goods if she had any .380. She laughed. I asked her how often she gets it in. She said once a month, maybe. So i don't buy this "hording" explanation for the ammo shortage. I'm inclined to believe it's a back door to gun control.

Even the NRA has stated it is increased consumer demand and gun owners stockpiling out of apprehension of future legislation. Based on all my interactions from gun owners I know and what I've read from Winchester, Remington, etc there is no reason not to believe production is the same, if not increased, while at the same time consumers have vastly increasing their rounds on hand.

Then why isn't Walmart getting .380's delivered? People aren't hording them, they're just plain not getting any.
Also, she said that when and if it does come in it's only a box or two. |

#2 Because production on more popular calibers get first priority. The only valid government "cause" of the shortage is that the new president (in addition a few new people in the house / senate) created a panic. Panic, as in sudden widespread alarm affecting many people at once. I make no comment if justified or unjustified panic. I'm only stating that the panic caused stockpiling, that caused shortages, that caused panic, that is causing more stockpiling, and so on. For example, next time your at Wal-Mart, see if the associate will share with you how many boxes of X ammo they would get in per month two years ago. You will most likely find they still receive around that same amount, it is just not staying on the shelf as long, and production has not increased, because the ammo makers don't want to get caught with their pants down when demand slows down. They are producing 9mm at increased levels, as they know that if demand does change, overstock of popular calibers will clear up.

I was at the WalMart where we buy groceries almost every week last Sunday looking at a heavy barreled 10/22. I had already looked at the empty ammo shelves when a guy comes up and asks about 9mm ammo. The WM employee pulls a box of WWB out of an unmarked cardboard box in the corner of the floor.
After the guy paid and left I walked over and told her I would like a box too, please. She said" that was the only box, we got one box of 9 and one box of 45 last night". I asked her did they not bother to put it on the shelves anymore and she said " I just haven't had time to stock it yet". It was after lunch, and even I'm not stupid enough to believe the hottest selling product they have at they moment doesn't get stocked till the afternoon. Especially since when I originally walked up she was just straightening stuff on the shelves. I really wish this crap would end so I could go back to shooting every other weekend, instead of this once a month(not counting the odd 25 rnds here and there to stay fresh) crap. I was just starting to get decent with my off hand when I had to cut back. I think I'm either going to buy a .22 Sig or a .22 conversion kit for a Glock so I can go back to shooting more often. |
