many tests conducted by ATK and the real world shootings proves this wrong. |

ATK... I'm afraid you guys got me there. Who/what are they? And, where can I find their tests?

The Speer GD, Federal HST and Winchester Ranger-T are all top performing bullets. All penetrate well. All expand well (as well as any JHP and better than most). The lab I wanted to link to is no longer accessible, but in a series of tests, the GD and Ranger-T were a little more consistent in their expansion. Any of these would serve you well. I wouldn't hesitate to buy any of these, in today's market. My personal preference is Ranger-T, GD, then Federal, but I usually end up with Speer GD, or Double Tap.

This is something I saved from someone elses test concerning HST +P.
A single round was fired from a Glock 19 and a Kel-Tec Sub-2000 into Gel. Both rounds were found to have lost mass due to fragmentation (lost petals). All bullets had retained gel under the copper jackets. The Glock 19 bullet captured 1 of the broken petal against the copper jacket and retained 2 of the six lead petals. The round from the Sub-2000 fired bullet retained zero petals. Notice how almost all the petals are missing from the 9mm 124 grain +P Federal Premium HST (P9HST3) bullets below. ![]()

there have been no reports or excess wt. loss in real worls shootings. infact the entire HST line offers some of the best non bonded performance through barriers. as for the rounds performance with a 16" barrel. i dont think federal intended the round to be shot from a 16" pistol. there is a reason its not available in .357 mag... should give you a clue. |

Little sensitive aren't we. I carry Federal HST 124gr +P as one of my only 2 defensive carries, the other should be obvious as well. The post was not to deface Federal at all, but one to provoke reasonable comments. The test in favor of the HST are overwhelming, however I have not seen a newer one comparing to the Speer Gold Dot for Short Barrell in a 9mm. Please send me one if you know of one, it would be appreciated.

Another point of view: I would pick the Gold Dot. Support the company that makes the ammo available to regular people, not just LE. Yes, I have purchased LE only ammo in the past like the Winchester Ranger and Federal 9mm+P+ but I am likely just as well protected with Gold Dot or CorBon and they sell to regular people. I like the Ranger because it's a tweaked version of the Talon and the Talon was a whipping boy for the media, the Fed +P+ 9mm is really nothing special and CorBon is just as powerful.
Like another person said, with ammo being hard to come by use what you can get that feeds 100% beyond funuction the slight difference in performance isn't likely enough to worry about. |

I'm trying out Hornandy's Critical Defense FXT ammo..... I always liked Fedl HST , however, I'm impressed with this ammo.

Both are quality rounds, I wouldn't hesitate to carry either. That said; I like the Gold Dots.
