Please buy the Gold Dots!

I am tired of everyone running up the prices and buying up all the HST's.

A single round was fired from a Glock 19 and a Kel-Tec Sub-2000 into Gel. Both rounds were found to have lost mass due to fragmentation (lost petals). All bullets had retained gel under the copper jackets. The Glock 19 bullet captured 1 of the broken petal against the copper jacket and retained 2 of the six lead petals. The round from the Sub-2000 fired bullet retained zero petals. Notice how almost all the petals are missing from the 9mm 124 grain +P Federal Premium HST (P9HST3) bullets below.
Ok, some of the petals are missing but where did they go? Since expansion occurs on impact and the intended target is body tissue, then secondary terminal damage may likely occur in the recipient of the bullet.

Regards,
Saber - I did the testing and took the picture - in all cases a 'free' petals did not seem to impact any additional damage like you would expect from a rifle round.

My personal take is I would not use the HST in 124 grain and only use the 147grain (in standard or +P). The 147 grain, in all cases, retained more weight, was larger, and penetrated deeper in the ballistic gel. I believe this is why, for 9mm, the ATK workshop LE tests never used the 124 grain.

see www.federalhst.com for more details of my test and please send me comments

All this dithering and worry. It's like seeing how many angels can dance on the head of a pin.

If you're selecting a bullet, pick one that has proven reseults and documentation. Then, and most important, make sure it's reliable in your gun. Last, make sure you can get resupplied with it.

I shoot an older bullet in some calibers because resupply is easier and the bullet has lots of documentation of being sucessful on the street where it counts. I'm refering to the Federal 115 Grain +P+ JHP, (9BPLE) in my 9mm. In the .357 Magnum I like a really old old load. The Federal 357B, but I have to settle for Remington's equivalent.

Pick a load and shoot the dang thing is my advice. Don't wring your hands over minor and small trivial matters, it just ain't worth it. Worry about your tactics and training. That's what really counts.

I would expect nothing less in the Defensive Ammunition & Ballistics thread!

To be sure - I like to test the rounds in my carry gun and do a bit of my own testing. I think everyone should, including the testing! Remember the ATK tests are sponsored by the manufacturer (likely budget from the marketing department). At least this is an obvious form of bias.

What I found was a big difference in the 9mm FederalHST round. Perhaps it will help some folks so take it for what's it is worth.

YMMV

hmm, if im ever attacked by a block of Jello i be sure and take your advice. for taking out BG's ill stick with 124gr. 9mm HST. they dont seem to be as affraid of the BG's and loose their petals like they do with YOUR and ONLY YOUR Jello.

JFYI, federal has run workshops with the 124gr. but the 147gr. come out real purdy in the Jello so...

I have found that water will give better expansion then gel.

Can you send the link for the 124 gr tests? I've looked and the lack of data was part of the driver for my testing. I would love to see some deeper data (glass and denim).
