All I can say is I have a close personal friend that works for Remington and He says ammo is shipping out as fast as they can produce it and load the trucks.
Prior to the election they were working 4 days a week 12 hour shift. Now they are working 24/7. They have even limited the amount of ammo that employees can purchase because the employee store is out of ammo.

Finding out the source of the ammo shortage
Some one must know whats going on with the ammo I was thinking about contacting the NRA and see if they know whats going or can get with some of the manufactures to find out why workers are being laid off. We can all guess what is happening or we can contact someone who can get to the source of the problem.

I think its a gamble now, the ammo producers think the bubble is about to burst for them. So they are now settling down, and scaling back for normal sales. They stand to lose profit, but they will still have high demand if they are wrong, and can keep the company stable and growing.
Also Current I hear....not sure on this one so do not take it as truth yet, Im still looking into it. But, Current might be a company of Al Gore, and its based in San Francisco California. So as with everything, take it with a grain of salt.... In my case I'm buying bulk.

Maybe not current?
The OP's referenced article is from January 09 though. So maybe it's not current?

Ok, I confess, I contrived the ammo shortage (at least locally) by buying as much as I could.

Ya, in Feb or March, I think there was something about Federal rehiring the people they layed off.

I have been deeply involved in all areas of manufacturing for over 35 years now. Primarily the metal stamping industry in design, tool making, engineering, etc. Companies like Federal or Remington & others have many caliber specific manufacturing lines. Each making at a specific maximum rate of parts per hour the components that come together to make a specific round. The tooling is quite expensive and carries with it a significantly long lead time for build to de-bug, to production ready. The presses and other related machinery again is pro9duction type and even caliber specific and quite expensive as well. I’d venture a guess that to install one average new production line your looking at a minimum of 6-8 months and over a million dollars. When hunting season is done and 12 ga #8 bird shot is not in demand there is no place to put the production workers. There are only 21 8 hour shifts available in a week. Beyond that you have reached your manufacturing capacity max. Are the manufactures likely to invest in more tooling and machines in this economy? Not likely. They will be happy to produce what they can take the higher profits on their limits of manufacturing, and wait for the economy and demand to stabilize.
Indeed some hanky panky is probably in the works. Remember concrete shortages or farther back the sheetrock shortages? In truth product was being squired away to fake shortages and run up the costs. Betting we will find the same thing here given enough time.

Here's what doesn't make sense. Ammo makers say they're running around the clock. Where is it? I can't buy .22, they're not sending that to Afganistan. Nor can I buy 9mm., .45, .223 at Wally World. Seems like they could sell a ton, and if they are good at anything, it's getting product to the consumer.
Gun dealers buying it all up? I don't see WWB at my gun dealer. So where is it? People hoarding? They must have enough now. How do you hoard if the shelves are always empty? Can't buy it online either. |
