Never shot any of the Extreme Shock ammo but have messed around with RCBD out of San Antonio which is a light weight frangible round. Absolute blast to shoot something like a defrosted turkey or chicken with it. Blows the bejebbers out of it. As far as self defense, it is reliable but I'm not sure about how it would be viewed by the courts. It would certainly cause extensive damage to the BG and there would be no need for the doctors to dig around for the bullet or fragments because there would just be a huge gaping hole.

Shoot--I'd be happy as a pig in slop to simply find ANY .45 ammo

For years I used nothing but Federal 230 grain hydra shocks in everything 45 acp I owned which were several from full size to compact and 1911 to polymer guns. I love the hydor shock 230. However I can hardly find it at all now and finding it reasonablt priced is even harder. The Federal HST I've been able to find and use are nice but I 'm about to the point I'll use about what ever I can find and will feed and eject without failure. You know like the 230 hydro shocks do.

Are you wanting a home defense? Worried about going through walls? or an all around good load?

For a 1911, I would say GS

I've found that the more rounded nose of the Golden Sabre is closer to the shape of the ball ammo the 1911 was designed for, and therefore will tend to feed more reliably.

I'm kinda like Scott Davies, I'm will to carry any good quality JHP at the moment, about all I can find is 230 FMJ. Good Personal Defense Ammo is really hard to find in my neck of the woods.

My preference is Buffalo Bore Ammo and am presently carrying 200 gr. Speer Gold Dot +P Buffalo Bore in my EDC.
