Range Owner Says Speer's .45 Cal. 200+p is no good???
Yesterday I was going to buy a box of Speer's .45 cal. 200+P and the range owner told me that there are better choices in .45 caliber for home defense and ranked this ammo's effectiveness as fair. Any thoughts on this ammo's effectiveness?
Any other info on this ammo would be appreciated. ![]()

I have no doubt that a Gold dot HP .45 200Grain bullet at +P pressure would be a decent SD round.
Sure there might be better but I wouldn't feel uneasy with a magazine load of the above, provided they functioned well in my pistol (as most GDHP's have). bosco |

If they are Speer's legendary "flying ashtray" load, I beg to differ with the range owner....

Next time you go to the range take the range officer a Baloney Sandwich.

The question you should have replied with was.....
"In what?"

here's a link to the gold dot site. check out the 200 +p and the 230 with standard pressure. 230gr is kind of the standard for the 45acp but the 200+p seems to have an edge. i've never seen a gel test on the 200gr so i cant say if penitration is as good as the 230gr or not.

Stole my thunder Ret. Either this guy can't make his margin on Speer, or he makes it huge on whatever he sells.

It has been my experience that folks who work in sporting goods stores, gun shops, and shooting ranges think that they have a lot of knowledge about what they sell, and in many cases what they don't sell. A little research will show that they have a very much self inflated idea as to what they know.
Take such folks with a grain of salt. I would be perfectly satisfied to use that ammo for my carry guns forever. I would say that if there was a problem it would be that the large cavity mouth might not feel well in some guns. If it feeds it is a very good round. Regards, Jerry |
