Agreed. My first concern is to make the gun is broken in. Then will it feed and function with cheaper HP handloads, then go for the gold and shoot up 50 - 100 rounds of PD ammo.

Anyone notice that PD ammo now comes in 20 round boxes What's with that?

It;s been a long time since I broke in a new gun. If I had to do it today, I would need to get a loan from the bank. That's if I could find the ammo.

About 500 rounds of practice, and at least 100 rounds of carry ammo to certify everything's hunky-dory.

And, yes, I'll usually burn through my carry mags whenever I go to the range.

You can choose to use less, and believe that your weapon/ammo combo is good to go...and, you'll probably be right. Heck, you could just load up a brand new gun, never test fire it, and it'd probably function fine if it had do.

I, however, don't like "probably".

I prefer a bit more empirical evidence.

YMMV.

At least 200 rounds of what you plan to load with.

What kind of guns are you guys running? Because any modern semi-auto of quality manufacturer should be good to carry into combat out of the box.

You know, I owned a springfield armory XD9 service and probably put around 2,000 fmjs through it without a single failure of any kind.
I only put about 3 boxes of hollow points through it during that time, still no problems at all.

I don't know about some of you folks, but as a college student I can't afford to dump $200+ (hp's usually sell for a 1$ + per round)dollars to make sure my modern combat/duty pistol can fire modern police issue self-defense/hollow point rounds. I think what some of you people are recommending is ludicrous, but thats just my opinion.

I just picked up a Springfield Armory XD(m) 9 and it will be my new carry pistol. I bought one box of speer gold dot, 20 count, for 25 dollars. I've got a few left over federal HST's too. I'm going to shoot up the 20 rounds of speer gold dots, and those few HST's and that will satisfy me knowing that my gun can reliably feed hollow points.
Of course I'm going to be shooting alot more fmj at the range than that.

I don't think anyone is "recommending" anything. We were asked what we do to "certify" out self defense ammo and we answered. I, for one, fully understand that other people have different budgets they are working with and not everyone can afford to blow a bunch of rounds downrange.

I think the handgun also matters. A 1911 for instance, can be a finicky firearm. All 1911 manufactures, everything from $400 mil-spec guns made in the Philippines to $3500 Wilson's, have their share of issues. The 1911 platform is very picky about magazines, extractor tension, barrel timing, ejection timing .... its finicky. I'm not counting my new Fusion as good to go until I've got 1000 trouble-free practice rounds through it and 500 SD rounds.

Glocks and XDs .. they are more modern designs that frankly, aren't as finicky. I wouldn't have a problem putting 100 rounds of practice ammo and 1 magazine of carry ammo through a Glock and calling it good.

Funny thing is ... I'd still prefer the 1911
