Hey guys! I need some help with my homework, please :)

I have 66 types of ammunition listed that I need definitions and photos for. So far, so good, but I've scoured the internet and need help with at least two right now...possibly more as I slog through this. Can any of you help, please?

1) What is "hard cast?" I've got "cast bullet" down, but is there a difference in casting types? Is there a "soft cast?" Can someone please explain the difference to me?

2) I got the "lead semi wadcutter," but what is a "lead semi wadcutter GAS CHECKED?" I haven't heard the term "gas checked" before, and all the reference I can find is comparison data, not what it actually IS.

Thanks in advance for any help. It's not cheating, I promise -- I don't get graded on this.

I'll do my best to help. My understanding is that hard cast bullets are very solid and do not change shape, or mushroom. While soft cast bullet are like a lead bullet that will "mush" and change shape against a solid object.

I believe that 'hard cast' refers to the actual hardness of the bullet, which is determined by the alloy. Hard cast bullets can be driven to higher velocities without leading the bore. A gas check is placed on the base of a cast bullet to protect the base from the effects of the hot gases produced during firing, this can help improve the accuracy of cast bullets. I'm sure some of the reloaders here will have more to add.

The term "Gas Check" is use to identify a small brass insert that goes on
the back of a lead bullet to keep the powder from burning the lead and
causing lead filled smoke from coming out of the barrel after shooting

That one use for it.

But the most common is for lead bullets in high powered rifles to
to "Check" the gas (read seal it)from burning powder , and keep the
pressure behind a lead bullet fired out of a high power gun.
other wise it would burn past the lead and damage the bullet causing
it not to fly straight.

Hard cast bullets will, IIRC, have a higher percentage of antimony and tin to lead than soft cast (at least that is what was used in the old days--goodness only knows what they use now)...so the alloy is harder, like Mr. Habib said.

A softer bullet will also expand more readily, especially for a self-defense situation. The Remington 158-grain LSWC-HP expands well even at low snubbie velocities because it is mostly pure lead (very soft). A hard-cast bullet often has applications in handgun hunting scenarios, where one is looking for deep penetration of tough muscle and bone without breaking apart.

Hard cast means a bullet hardness harder than normal.

Lead semi wadcutter is this


Lead semi wadcutter gas checked is this.


The gas check on the bottom is 99% of the time copper, as in this example. This bullet type would be abbreviated as LSWC-GC.
