Im a big fan of .45, but there are days I just want more ammo. The 9mm gives me the ammo. A Sig 220, or 226 are my fave fullsize carry guns. I actually have one BUG thats a blast and its a 11+1 .380. Grendals may be a like mule with recoil but that 11+1 is really nice in a pocket.

Agreed on both assertions.

A peewee .17 caliber airgun pellet to the occular orbit will stop any human being, but not most dangerous animals singularly due to differences in their own specific physical makeup.

Meanwhile a big bore .45 ACP _and_ fast moving and big bore 12GA at close distance have been known by confirmed reports to not stop humans and animals both, 100% of the time.

Personally I carry both .45 ACP and 9MM.
Interestingly I too, like Suarez, am a fan of the Corbon DPX line in specific for combat purposes. I apply DPX in both .45 and 9MM.

I consider 9MM/.38 Special/.38 Super to be the lowest/smallest/lightest caliber as _optimally_ appropriate for combat use.
While .357, .40, and .45 amongst other fast and/or large caliber projectiles are even better.

Nothing though is 100% effective.
Everyone knows Accuracy and Shot placement > Caliber....Even that of .50 BMG

In the final analysis it all rounds down to what can an individual firearm handler/shooter/'operator' employ with 1) Accuracy as related to 2) Shot placement being 3) Relative to the specific build and structure of the threat.

Shooting Deebo in the bicep or foot with a 9MM won't be all that effective overall. Same would apply with a .17 caliber airgun pellet.
But place that shot with accuracy in an area where it can be of use and well it's useful...regardless of the size hole it might make upon entry, as long as the caliber of choice has bullet design as well as mass and energy enough to penetrate the target deeply.

I carry a fullsize USP .45, plenty of rounds (12+1) and plenty of stoping power.

Ditto--but not always at the same time.

Reading that article brought to mind something I read this summer, in T. Rossevelt's Hunting Trips of a Ranchman and The Wilderness Hunter.

"I didn't know how to shoot well, but I did know how to shoot often" - Teddy Roosevelt.

So I guess Teddy would have carried a hi-cap 9 too.

In 1981, I went to England, to be trained by the SAS, in pistol shooting. The training was every day and a half day Saturday, only day off was Sunday. This went on for 45 days when our unit came back we all brought Browning High Powers, I still have mine to this day. I retired it and it is in a case on the wall in my living room. I took in to Beirut, in 82, and Grenada, in 83, I have shot 40, 357sig and magnum, 38spl, 45acp, 45gap, 22, 25, 32, I have not shot 10mm yet.

Guys I am not internationaly or nationaly known however I have been on the two way gun range and will tell you that you must hit your intended target with every round you fire thus neturalizing the threat and reducing your liability.

You will have three fights:

The gunfight
The legal fight
The emotional fight

Speacking for myself the legal fight was the scariest

Stay Safe

good read. not for sure if i agree with everything he said. But the main jest of...shoot the largest caliber you can shoot fast and accurate is the bottom line.

We must face the facts guys. In all these years of debating 9mm vs .45 no one has been able to show one is better than the other. Recall just recently, right here in Chattanooga, LEO shot at a guy 59 times and got about 20 something hits, all .45 ACPs, before the guy was subdued.

If there were a significantly better performing caliber, it would have been identified by now, but even leading experts concede that the heart of the analysis problem is insufficient statistically samples. That's not to say there are not a lot of shootings, there are, but there are so many variables, that it is all but impossible to correlate.

One other issue that always comes up is capacity versus big holes. Well, I make no bones about it, I'm a believer in high capacity. Why? Because I suspect in a gunfight, where I'm moving, the threat is moving, and shooting at me, and perhaps a second threat is involved, there's gonna be a lot of missing going on. If you aren't convinced of that by all the police shootings, try this: get two paint ball guns and square off against a buddy, only wear protection for your head, and have some start signal and see how many hits each of you get compared to the shots fired.
