Well, you are a true gun enthusiast. You know and understand the gritty details of the sport. The people you run with are probably the same. However, most people are not. Most shooters are not. Most public range patrons own a gun or two, and stop in a few times a year and blast off a box of ammo. I dont count them as a true enthusiast.
I'm saying that the guy at the counter who is making little more than minimum wage probably doesn't know the details, and even if he does, most customers don't really want to know anyway. The simple 'cliff's notes' version works for them. Instead of arguing with customers at the counter about what is what, ( and gun people love to do this) they make a sweeping rule to protect their interests.

Well, because I hate to miss a good debate, I'm disappointed in saying I can agree to that.

I spoke to the Director of my local range purposely with this thread in mind. He said it's not about the brass nor the unburned powder. It's the Wolf ammo degrading the steel plate backstop.

My range is outside. It doesn't even have a roof. It is a 100 yard range. The range is on Department of Natural Resources property (Harrison State Forrest). It is first come first serve. There is no range master. You can shoot rifle, pistol or shotgun. You just have to police your area. Occasionally there is a Park Ranger. They are mainly concerned that you are practicing safe firearms use and you have eye and ear protection. I shoot there all year around even in the winter. It makes practicing very realistic.
