As others have mentioned, just stay away from +p and you will be fine. Also the light rounds 115gr and 124gr should be a little softer firing than the 147gr. I prefer 147's, but pick what works for you.

Federal HST's are probably top of the heap at the moment, when you can find them. I just got a couple of boxes of .40 HST's from ammunitiontogo.com, but they were out of 9mm.

I use Federal Tactical HST in 147grn for all my 9mms. All my HK Squeezecockers, Walthers and S&Ws eat it like candy and it's a fairly soft shooting round. The HST bullet design is incredible and expands like nothing I have seen in over 35 years of shooting in the military, as an LEO and now retired! Streichers currently has it in stock as I just received two boxes yesterday. The +P 147 HST is also a great bullet but you can feel the difference when firing and I don't consider it soft shooting.

low recoil

I have a lightweight 9 myself (Make and model unimportant) because I'm only 5' 7. I load with 9MM, Federal hydra-shok 124 grain. The recoil is very mild, and after testing by shooting water filled 1 gal containers, I am sure it would be a man stopper.
