even buy into that thinking)of about 4 to 8 percent at the cost
of at least 10 percent loss on round count in the gun.

Loss of personal performance with follow up shots for me was
hard to guess, but it was over 10 percent with .40-.45
The cost of ammo to practice with was that lower with 9MM
I can buy three boxes of 9MM for what two boxes of 40 or 45 cost
Thats a loss of 33 percent of practice to go up from 9MM to
40 or 45.

Going down from 9MM is the same story in reverse
less power (IE one shot stop)and more cost.
Well put! That was the same conclusion I came to, thus my primary carry is 9mm and BUG is .38 spcl.

I've bought and shot 5 times the amount of 9mm over .45 this past year. Although not the only factor, cost has had something to do with that. I have just as much confidence (or lack of) in modern 9mm ammo as any other caliber for SD so it makes it a no-brainer for me.

Really? Do you have a source for this? Every test I've seen puts 9mm, .40, .45, 10mm, .357 Sig, etc within the margin of error. Simply put, all ammo makers are trying to meet the same FBI standard, so (no surprise) they all do.

Someday, when you're 'bigger', I'll let you shoot my EDC, a Glock-36 (.45 caliber).
Even my wife can shoot it...but again, it's not for wimps.

Of course you can shoot a .45, and BG's hate the bigger holes.

No need, just buy 10mm ammo off the shelf - most of it is loaded to 40 specs anyway . This is really meant, in good faith, as a warning that when buying 10mm ammo, you may not be getting what you think you are.

Do you disbelieve the evidence found done with ballistic gelatin testing? I accept these tests as factual. They show the .40 round to penetrate about double the 9mm if I recall correctly.

Many police agencies have switched to .40 pistols because of supposed greater stopping power, as well as still manageable recoil and comparable magazine capacity to a 9mm.

I don't doubt the tests, but I also know that most bullets kill, and the real-world differences are smaller than most people think.

Training and shot placement are considerably more important than caliber. There is a tendency to blame the caliber whenever a combat situation goes wrong, yet unfortunately, training (or lack thereof) is usually to blame.

I carry a .40, but im definitely on the "nine is fine" wagon. Each has advantages and disadvantages i.e. capacity, bullet mass, recoil/follow up shots. I like .40 because I am not very recoil sensitive and I think it's a fine mix of bullet mass and capacity.
