David III,

Although I appreciate your courtesy, please call me David. The list isn't a "be all, end all" but I suspect most people interested in tactics, self-defense, etc. will find the items worthwhile.

Here is my short list of reading and reference on the subject.
  • "Shooting to Live” by Fairbairn and Sykes.
  • “Kill or Get Killed” by Col. Rex Applegate.
  • “Bullseyes Don’t Shoot Back” by Col. Rex Applegate and Michael Janich.
  • “The Close-Combat Files of Col. Rex Applegate”.
  • “Shooting For Keeps: Point Shooting For Close-Quarter Combat” by Rex Applegate (video)
  • “The Principles of Personal Defense” by Col. Jeff Copper.

Though I have not read or seen these yet, they do come highly recommended by people I respect…
  • “Basic Gunfighting 101” by Michael T. Rayburn
  • "Instinctive Point Shooting: Street Proven Firearms Tactics” by Michael T. Rayburn (video)

I just read Armed Response by David Kenik. It was pretty informative. I'd recommend it.

My List (in no particular order)

In the Gravest Extreme Massad Ayoob
Principles of Personal Defense Jeff Cooper
Armed & Female Paxton Quigley (NOT for ladies only!)
The Gift of Fear Gavin DeBecker
The Combative Perspective Gabe Suarez
Guns,Bullets,& Gunfights Jim Cirillo
Real-World Survival! Walt Rauch
In Self Defense Mike Izumi
Combat Handguns magazine:skim the 'guns of the month' articles
& concentrate on the 'It Happened to Me!','Street Survival' & 'Arms &
the Law' columns.
Fiction
I recommend Robert A.Heinlein (Starship Troopers,Tunnel in the Sky,etc) & Louis Lamour;particularly 'Lando' for where Orlando Sackett learns he will never be an especially fast gun:"I had to face the fact that I would be firing into a blazing gun.I realized I must face & (accurately) return that fire, even if I were hit."

'The Things They Carried' is an excellent and quick read (200 pgs) by Tim O'Brian. It is an excellent Vietnam era war story that revolves around the author and a few central characters of his platoon. Really enjoyed it.

Also....'Generation Kill' by Evan Wright is a must read.

I took Mike's two day "Instinctive Point Shooting Instructor Course" and have both "Basic Gunfighting 101" and his video. Mike's an excellent instructor with very solid, down to earth material. Thoroughly recommended.

In addition to the many excellent choices offered thus far, look for the 4th Edition (older) of The Book of Combat Handgunnery, by Chuck Taylor. Also (I hope I didn't miss it in the other posts), The Truth About Self-Protection, by Massad Ayoob (Bantam Books). If I had to choose my personal two favorites, these two are the ones!

Good luck, and good shooting!

Well, I just see I did miss ccw9mm's mention of Ayoob's The Truth About Self Protection...oh well, that two votes for that one!
