Thanks for the informative report!
My pleasure. Though, I don't know how informative it is for folks, really, given that my gauge and perceptions are my own and those will be different from everyone else's. All I can hope for is that my descriptions are concrete and well-grounded enough in understandable terms such that folks can see where I'm coming from. Unfortunately, I have so little to compare the CZ P-01 against, being a relative (15yr) shooting newbie. I mean ... come on, there aren't but a thousand folks or so who have ever shot a Browning BDM (for comparison)!

I'll surely keep 'em coming. I'm nothing if not "talkative."

Regards (plinking blisters and all!),

- Michael

Range Report #4 -- CZ P-01 9mm compact -- June 30, 2006

RANGE REPORT #4 for the CZ P-01 9mm

July 30, 2006 -- Fourth range session, after purchase.

Reliability -- Two new jams, today. So, that's 3 FTF in 1700 rounds = 0.176% failure rate = 99.82% reliability rate.
  • Goal -- Continue the break-in period of the gun and loosen up the action. Specific focus on "dirty" shooting.
  • Initial Cleaning -- Deliberately left it dirty from the previous range session, to see how the P-01 can handle getting cruddy over multiple hundreds of rounds. After today's session of 425 rounds, it's now 1225 rounds since the last cleaning.
  • Shots -- 425 rounds today, all generic Remington UMC FMJ standard-pressure, plus three magazines' worth of HMC 115gr +P JHP. As of today, the P-01 now has 1700 rounds through it.
  • Usage -- All magazines were 1st shot DA, subsequent shots SA. All Weaver stance, medium speed. Four different magazines, including two new ones. One of the three new mags sent by CZ ended up being a 10-rd mag, which will be sent back for replacement.
  • Trigger Action -- (I shoot left handed.) I am beginning to be able to ignore the slight grit in the trigger pull, but it's still there. Another 500rds of snap caps, this evening.
  • Ejection – Sharp, crisp, reliable. 4-5ft away, landing within a ~1ft circle on the floor.
  • Grip -- Am trying to focus harder on my physical grip on the gun, to ensure the web of my hand remains strongly behind the centerline of the bore axis (for maximum control). It can make a good 0.75" difference in my aim at 10yds.
  • Aim -- Am regularly able to punch out 1" to ~1.5" holes in the paper, from 7-10yds, minus a couple of fliers across a magazine's worth. On the "US Army Official 50ft Small Bore Rifle Target," which contains 11 small targets on the paper, I'm able to fairly reliably hit about half the mini-targets within the rings, which is about 2" groupings. A flier here and there, but otherwise improving accuracy.
  • Jams/failures -- Two failures to feed (FTF) today. Note that I have not cleaned the gun since round #475 ... 1225 rounds ago. Add to that one minor FTF on the initial hollow point I used (which never recurred) and that's two-of-three likely self-induced failures in 1225 rounds.
  • Reliability -- That's 3/1700 = 0.176% failure, or 99.82% perfect. Still excellent, in my book. Time for a good cleaning.
  • Cleaning at Range -- None, though two new FTF's show that it's high time this gun got a good, home style cleaning.
  • Cleaning after the Range -- After 1225 rounds, finally cleaned the gun with a full dose of Hoppe's #9, some copper bore solvent, light oil on all visible moving/friction areas, light oil on all magazine wear points and the frame's rails, then a wipe-down with a coated pistol rag. Will be purchasing a can of CLP / break free, to add to the arsenal.
Tomorrow (Monday), the P-01 heads off to Matt Mink for the trigger/reliability package, along with four factory magazines.

Saw a Kel-Tec P3AT, today. Was seriously impressed with the size, weight, concealability. Am continuing to explore others' written experiences on various forums on the internet. If I can convince myself that the reliability can be had in this, it might well replace my S&W 442 revolver as the go-everywhere piece. We'll see.

No photos, today.

Next installment won't be for many weeks, as the gun will be at Matt's for the trigger/reliability work. When I return, I will give the gun a good cleaning, will install Omega's Gabon Ebony checkered wood grips, and then hit the range again. At that time, I'll take a few close-up photos to showcase the new work.

Michael - another choc-chip-cookie

Thx for the extra detailed impressions. As I keep saying - so valuable for other folks to read, thanks.

Yeah, I'll grant that this P-01 is pretty great. But, I have always done trigger/reliability jobs on all carry firearms I've had, as a matter of course. The point of 3 FTF's in 1700 rounds isn't the number, so much as when that might occur. If I'm carrying, I simply cannot have it occur if I need it. So, throating, de-burring, polishing and tuning the action and mags. All of that results in a smoother, easier-to-shoot, more-reliable package. That it happens to already be fairly reliable and accurate is, well, icing on the cake I suppose. It will be a downright pleasure to shoot, in a few weeks.

Hm. You should have seen this CZ 75B, down range a bit. It had 5 to 10 failures to go into battery every magazine, for a half-dozen mags. Bad news. Couldn't nail it down to a given mag. It appeared to be the bullets being used (hand loads), as a couple mags' worth of factory loads worked fine.

Hey ccw9mm,

I'm new to CC, and the first auto gun I bought is a CZ-75 Compact 9mm. It is all steel and came with 2 14 round mags.

The gun shoots great. Mine is a little heavier then yours but I think it is the same gun?

Anyhows I enjoyed your reports.

@CrankinNM

Hi,
Just to clarify, the CZ-75 you have is not the same pistol as the P-01.

The P-01 was a full strip down, review, re-assess the basics, new pistol that CZ put together for, amongst other things, a NATO request for a standard and highly reliable, "just don't break" 9mm.

New ergonomics, new frame structure, alloy not steel, accessory rail etc.

They reviewed the ergonomics of the 75 and 85 ranges and when they came up with the new design, they beasted the poor thing like you would not believe........ A 1.5 mtr (4'9") drop, cocked and UNlocked 54 times, 3 mtr (9'8") drops at least 5 times the same (actually the lab, for a bit of a giggle decided to see just how many times they could do the drop test but got tired at 352 !!!!!!)

I went for it's bigger brother in the end the SP-01, love at first sight/fire.......8-)

@ccw9mm,

Re your FTF's, the official testing averaged the Mean Rounds Before Failure (when cleaned and maintained) at 2142, so yours look pretty much on the money taking your factors into consideration.

Oooooh! The P-01 is back. Time for some shootin'.

Of course, wouldn't you know that the Ayoob LFI course was last weekend. Arghhh. I pick it up tomorrow, fresh back from Matt Mink, who did a full reliablity/action job to smooth up everything as well as install Trijicon night sights. After that, I'll put on the new ebony grips from Sam @ Omega. Am still awaiting arrival of the new K&D Laredo OWB holster, which should come in the any day now.

Over the weekend, hopefully, I'll get in several hundred rounds' worth, to eval the "new" P-01. Gee, it's almost like my birthday.

I thought the P-01 came stock with trijicon night sights?

Mine came sith some kind of light retaining paint. I'm guessing yours came with the same sights. My rear sight is fixed, some come with windage adjustment.

Anyhows how do you like the new sights compared to the stock ones?
