ppk recall
I'm new to this group, so Hello all. I own a PPK/S that I purchased just over a year ago. It provided me with many headaches until I reached the 1000 round mark. It has become flawless and I really like this firearm as a carry piece. That said, I remain somewhat confused over the wording of the recall notice from S&W.
My interpretation is as follows: "When the manuel safety is disengaged (ie, in the fire position), S&W's product engineering group has determined that the possibility exists in certain firearms that lowering the hammer (ie, using the safety/decocking lever) may cause a chambered round to fire." Since I shoot left-handed, I never use the safety/decocker. On the rare occasion that I lower the hammer on a loaded chamber, I lower it manually with my thumb. On that basis, I don't see any reason to have the modification done. Is there anything wrong with this interpretation? |

So I talked to the genius brigade at S&W
Seeing as how they have had the gun for about three weeks now...
After they played 20 questions with me instead of asking if they already had the gun or not, I was able to ask my question about how long it would take to get it back. THEY DON'T EVEN HAVE THE REPLACEMENT PARTS YET!! They "expect" to get the parts from their "supplier" sometime in the next two to three weeks, they hope. (I couldn't make this up if I tried) I was told that they will then be able to make the appropriate repairs to 500 guns a day. (Anybody want to give me the over/under on that one?) With any luck, the summer carry gun will be back in time for fall. |

Lovely. I bought this for my summer carry gun too, being in the south I wanted something small enough to carry no matter the heat/clothing issues.

Update
I am new here but after reading the post about the parts last PM I got kinda 'chapped" so I called myself this AM.......Actually two of us did at different times.
They now say ALL the shipping issues have been resolved and one should not have any problems with UPS.....if you do tell them about the Air Waiver Contract. They "should" be up to date at UPS. They also said that the PARTS ARE IN.....And that work would begin this week and that a weapon mailed in today should expect only a 4-5 week wait rather than the 8-12 they were putting out. This is due to the earlier than anticipated arrival of the parts. They said they had aprox. 12,000 already to work on but expected to complete 2500-5000 a week. I certainly hope they get closer to the higher number.......We shall see. The lady was quite pleasant and seemed relieved to be able to say the parts WERE in...so I do believe her and will be sending mine out this week. Some of you who started this thread a ways back should be getting yours back in a week or two I would expect from what they said.....They WILL be fixed in the order recieved. Let us know when someone gets one back. Now I'll go introduce myself.....I have been reading here for a week or so. |

That is certainly good news. I sent mine in quite a while ago (3/26 actually) and really do hope it's back soon. I miss it.

Yea, I also sent mine in on 3/26 and I am also patiently waiting. Thanks guys for calling because I was going to call this week myself, but since Sgt Joe gave a report, I do not have to call. Welcome to the board Sgt Joe

That's great news! Mine was delivered to Houlton on 24 March. So it's been there for six weeks. Maybe I will have it back within the 8 - 12 weeks they were initially quoting.
Given the delay in sending out return labels, I'm betting mine was one of the first ones there. I hope that doesn't mean I'll be the guinea pig for an untested design change. |

Update---may 19
I spoke with a Supervisor type today about this recall. I have since my last post decided to hold onto mine until the backlog is somewhat cleared.
Dude said work had begun and a VERY FEW had been sent back out, he did stress that it was at this point a very few. The backlog is now near 20K guns. They are currently doing 200-300 guns a day with goals of 500-600 per day, It was his advice to just hold on to mine rather than wait for months for it to be returned. He also said not all guns will be re-worked as all do not have problems, they were required by law to recall ALL of them anyway. Some may well just be inspected and marked and sent back but there is no way to tell without sending them in. I was really hoping for a better report today but at least they are working on them and I will call them back every 10-14 days to check status and update here as I do. He did say they were hiring extra people but that they had to be trained....Also I think some of the call-center people are temps. or brand new as the girl I got first just kept reading a script to me rather than listening to and answering my questions, I had to ask for Supervisor. She wanted my serial number to check and see if they had it after I told her I had it in MY hand!....Then she wanted to send me a label after I told her I had one. If you do call bypass folks who wont listen and ask for a supervisor. I wish it could have been a better report but it is what it is ![]()
